We’re worried by insecurity -MCP leader

Leader of opposition Lazarous Chakwera has expressed concern with the rising insecurity and is calling on new Inspector General of Police Lexten Kachama to intensify efforts to arrest the situation.

“It is sad that as I speak the security situation in the country has deteriorated to levels we have never seen before. Malawians no longer have a sense of safety and security even in their homes,” Chakwera pointed out.

The opposition chief who is also president of Malawi Congress Party (MCP), said citizens are worried as people brutally murdered in their own homes and banks robbed in broad day light.

“Carjackings in our cities and highways are now commonplace. What is even more terrifying are stories that some elements within the police are aiding and abating crime and even participating in crime.

“The police are supposed to be custodians of internal security and if they are involved in these heinous activities, where will citizens run to for protection?” Chakwera added.

He urges the newly confirmed Inspector General of Police to “urgently attend” to the issues of security of people and property in the country.

Chakwera also asked the law enforcers to punish those behind a series of albino killings.

“We are also saddened with the spate of attacks and killings of people with albinism. This is unfortunate, and we condemn this in the strongest terms. Government should handle with urgency, tighten security and punish the culprits to the fullest,” said Chakwera.

Fifteen albinos have been reported abducted and killed in Malawi since the start of the year.

Albinism is a condition where people are born with little or no pigment in their skin and hair. People with the condition tend to stand out in Africa, and are sometimes targeted by witch doctors who use their body parts in so-called magic potions.

The fish rots from the head. The president and his administration must be held responsible for all the insecurity, that is taking place in this country. The CEO of any organization is fully responsible and accountable for the performance of his organization. In this case, APM is in charge for security in this country. If he is failing to issue orders effectively, then he needs to step down. Opening community colleges that will produce more jobless youth is not the way to go especially if there are no follow up plans to attract foreign investment to generate sustainable jobs. These people… Read more »
