What fruit are we bearing?

The concept of bearing fruit is used often in scripture. The Bible likens people to fruit trees or grapevines and portrays God as the owner of the orchards and vineyards. The Master knows our character by our spiritual fruits, just as a tree is known by its fruit. Jesus Himself spoke about knowing the false prophets by their fruits and said that it’s impossible for false doctrine generated by false prophets, to bring forth good fruit.prayer

The good fruit is Christ likeness; while the evil fruit is self-likeness. Jesus warned in Mathew 7:19 that “every tree that brings not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire”. The good fruits that we are talking about include love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control; the list can go on and on.

Mathews 21:19 tells us that Jesus was hungry and He saw a fig tree in the way; and He came to it; and found nothing. The bible tells us that He only found leaves only in the fig tree but no fruit. This means that when He saw the leaves that were showing as if there was fruit, He assumed that there was fruit, which was not the case. In real sense Jesus was actually referring to those who show off as being religious but in fact are spiritually barren will be cursed.

The disappointment of Jesus with the fig tree is an extremely significant event. One may think that Jesus was merely disappointed with a tree that failed to feed Him when He was hungry. That is not the case because this is about what the true children of God are portraying to the whole world. Many people are running for the leaves that they have seen from far thinking they will be fed with a fruit, but when they get there they find that they cannot be fed as the fruit is no longer there.

There is nothing that disappoints our Lord Jesus Christ than this because many people who would have been fed and turn back from there bad ways are still in the same condition as they were when they came looking for the fruit to be fed.

Good fruit is born in the heart and blossoms outward into the world. This has nothing to do with good works because no one can please God with good works. We need to understand that God is interested in our inner motives, never our outward deeds.

If we can only place our trust and faith in Jesus Christ will inevitably produce the good fruits Paul mentioned in his letter to the Galatians. When we exhibit these good fruits, the world will witness through our lives the glory that is Jesus Christ and many people will come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
