In the modern world, we are mostly defined by one’s profession; by how we make a living. Sure, the late Bingu drove a “taxi” at one point in his life: sometimes you do what you gotta do. The wtiter is being disingenuous, to the nth degree, by not even acknowledging Bingu’s economics credentials. (And HKB’s and APM’s also.) The guy (Bingu) was a Master in Economics, for crying out loud. And, from the dawn of Malawi’s independence, he made most of his living as an economist. Did he not? So, stop belittling Africans, for whatever reasons, Mr Nick Wright. Show… Read more »

Nick Wright again with the usual European `I know Africa/Malawi better` attitude and condensanding perspective. Our leaders might have failed us but Europeans or the British like you should shut up because you are the worst thieves and hypocrites. You are the people who use our leaders to steal our resources through unfair foreign investment regime and international trade – how much has Europe stolen from Africa/Malawi including fraudulent contracts and unashamed keeping of our artefacts in your museums in London. In fact, Africa Confidential is a racket that makes money out of writing and soeculating on our misery and… Read more »

Cashgate is not the worst my friend. As a public servant i get amused by such shallow articles. The malawi government loses more than what was lost through “cashgate”. Mind you the UK is sitting on millions of our money stolen by British Asians but UK is not interested in sending the money back to mw. The system is what is wrong. Politicians connive with public servants to defraud govt. Why do you think Llomwes get all the plush and key jobs?

Nick Wright ,I think you don’t have enough information and the truth about Dr HKB’ wealth ,what you have written are just speculations ,Sir David Steel ,the the leader of Liberal Democract Party in the UK promised the then Ruling party in Malawi UDF that he was going to unearth Dr HKB funds in the UK Banks which was aledged to be in millions of pounds .David Steel discovered that Dr HKB didn’t have the amount of money which was claimed that he had and afterwards he just kept quiet . So Mr Wright do enough research instead of this… Read more »

‘Che Captain’ you are the one who is fake. After Bingu was kicked out of COMESA he operated a minibus which he personally drove while in Lilongwe living in Area 15 with a Mr Namondwe who ended being Malawi envoy to China during Bingu’s rule. One day when his minibus had a tyre puncture at the junction to Bambino Secondary school he asked for my help to fix a spare tyre. After fixing the tyre he drove off promising he would me some cash later for my chibuku. Anyway he never did and I never met him thereafter.

Captain Bingu was a minibus driver in Lilongwe after he was fired from Comesa. In other countries like South Africa mini bus drivers are called taxi drivers.
Nick In Malawi we like and support people who steal. If Lutepo can decide to run for a president he can win!!!!!!!

It will need a very strong President to deal with this mentality. In Malawi everyone now want to reap where he did not sow. It is a mentality everywhere from house maid to her master to the office and to the Ministries’ headquarters. Drastic change management at the top will have ripple effect.
