Woman in unassisted child birth: Pangs of CHAM nurses strike

A strike by medical workers under the Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM) has started manifesting its nasty stint with a woman delivering without any medical help at Mlanda Health Centre in Ntcheu Friday.

Tiyamike Haswell, 21, ended her nine months of sweet pain without a midwife at her side.

“When we arrived they told us that they could not help me because they were on strike,” said Haswell.

She further confided in local press that “it was a horrendous experience.”

According to Haswell, her mother, Jennifer Wesile, 51, is the one who aided her delivery.

“But it was frustrating because we had walked with difficulties for over two hours thinking that we would get help,” she said.

Haswell, who delivered a baby boy, said she was happy that she and her child were in good health.

Ntcheu District Hospital spokesperson Stella Kawalala said she was not aware of the situation.

She pledged she would dig into the matter to establish what transpired.

The workers, who are also members of the National Organization for Nurses and Midwives (NONM), Thursday downed tools indefinitely over deplorable salaries and working conditions after government had failed to honour their seven-day ultimatum.

The nurses are demanding, apart from robust leave grant packages and allowances, for a 45 per cent pay rise.

Let this be known to all, NURSING profession as its name suggests, its a calling. who so ever would join this profession must know its a total calling from God, you are saving lives. Its your duty to find other avenues of generating income while you are working. kungoti kumalawi kuno sitinaphunzitsidwe kuzipezera tokha ndalam. Find out your Talents, Gifts and your capabilities and use them to generate income. Small small businesses will do. Nurses you have off duties, utilise those chnces as other nurses do… Read more »

this is what we call cruelty or non-mercy. Do you know that there is no pain on the earth which is more painful than which is experienced when a woman is giving birth? Why can you let a woman who has been suffering for 9months respectively to deliver herself? What could happen if she and a baby dies? This means you had an intention to kill her because money? Avoid please!!

Blame the Minister not nurses, warning were given with an ample time, but he took it personal why didn’t they call for emergency meeting when he got the notice? nurses are clean on this context of course i can have a feeling be it my Sister or anybody in relations but.Our government officials they must learn the meaning of strike, they always think of pizza and when are they going to represent the country abroad that is what it their mind signing allowances that is all.this is shameful See my name.
