Yaos form Chiwanja cha Ayao heritage group

Yao tribesmen have announced  they are forming   a heritage grouping as a way of preserving their culture, similar to what former Malawi president the late Bingu wa Mutharika, formed – Mulhako wa Alhomwe – which will be called Chiwanja cha Ayao.

Initially, the Yao’s formed Ndamo Sya Yao, but the group died a natural death.

“We wish to inform the all Yao’s and Malawians in general that we are in the process of forming a Yao heritage to be known as ‘Chiwanja cha Ayao’ literary meaning an Association/organisation for the Yao,” said the grouping’s spokesman Rev. MacDonald Sembereka.

Sembereka told Nyasa Times that Chiwanja cha Ayao’s main purpose is to “preserve, promote and nurture the Yao values and norms among those who call themselves such and the upcoming generations.”

He said the process has taken years but now “a more united independent interim committee was formed on 6th September 2014”.

The interim national executive committee members of Chiwanja Cha A Yao is headed by chairman Dr. Allan Chilimba who is deputised by Alhaji Twaibu Lawe.

Ronnex  Issah is the secretary general, Hassan Nkata (vice secretary),  Mrs Khadija Paseli (treasurer), Abdul McKennedy Yasin (vice treasurer), White B. Chiboda (vice publicity secretary).

Executive members are Ibrahim Bwanausi Milazi and Joseph Matola.

The Committee invites all interested Yao’s to register with the Secretary or the Publicity Secretary.
