Zomba Stadium project starts this month – Minister
Malawi government has plans to construct a 20 000-seater stadium in Zomba as a way of increasing recreational grounds for the people in the former capital city, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Kondwani Nankhumwa has said.
Nankhumwa said this in parliament after MP for Zomba Central (People’s Party (pp) Patricia Nagonzo Kainga asked the Minister to consider upgrading Zomba Community Centre to a stadium.
“ Zomba is a city and needs better facilities,” she said.
In response, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development said government is aware that Zomba as a city requires facilities befitting its city status and this includes a modern stadium.
“Mr Speaker, Sir, I am pleased to inform the Honourable Member for Zomba Central that government has decided to construct a modern stadium in the city of Zomba,” said Nankhumwa ttracting applause from backbenchers.
“Government provided start up resources for the construction of the stadium during the 2016/2017 Revised Rudget. Procurement of the contractors by the Zomba City Council to carry out the construction works are at an advanced stage,” he said.
Nankhumwa said t he project is expected to start within this month of May, 2017.
“I would like to assure the Honourable Member that in the draft 2017/2018 Budget Estimates, more resources have been allocated to the project for the continuation of the construction works,” the Minister who is also Leader of the House, said..
Zomba Community Centre Ground (ZCCG) which has been hosting key Super League matches over the years, has recently been on the wane.

This is a joke …does it mean that the project which is to start this may 2017 and no body knows. .Malawi sazatheka. .
“Malawi government has plans … ” That’s how the article starts off, so as I continued reading I knew that nothing of consequence would be reported, or will ever happen. “Government provided start up resources … ” What does that mean? That is just the usual vague rhetoric from a politician. What resources have been provided?
