Zomba teen mum arrested for dumping baby in maize garden
A 15 year old girl identified as Maria Fred is under police custody for allegedly dumping a baby in a maize field, Police has confirmed.
The teenager dumped the baby, aged one year and eight months-in a garden of her neighbour identified as Agnes Chibula, who woke up other people to go and fetch the baby which was crying mercilessly at around10pm.
“Yes, we arrested Maria Fred aged 15 on 11th March 2016 for dumping a baby and she is answering a charge of baby dumping here in Zomba,” said Patricia Supliano, Zomba Police Public Relations Officer.
She added: “Fortunately the baby was not hurt and that the people identified both the baby and the mother such that they launched ahunt for the mother during the same night and apprehended her at a certain bottle store within the city.”
The accused comes from Mbangombe village in chief Malemia in Nsanje.
