Baker Tilly back in Malawi: Launches forensic audit into Blantyre Water Board
British Forensic Auditors Baker Tilly has moved in to carry out fraud and forensic services at Blantyre Water Board (BWB).
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has been probing BWB on allegations of abuse of office levelled against the board’s suspended chief executive (CE) Andrew Thawe and procurement irregularities at the board.
But the bureau is waiting the conclusion of Baker Tilly forensic audit before taking action, Nyasa Times understands.
The London-based Baker Tilly, who made an audit on the country’s infamous cashgate scandal, moved into BWB on September 29, 2015 contracted by European Investment Bank to carry out audit on investment projects and value for money in its procurement.
ACB senior public relations officer Egrita Ndala has since refused to discuss specifics of the investigations being conducted in the two BWB issues as doing so may jeopardise the probe.
ACB launched investigations into the alleged procurement irregularities at BWB in October 2014 following an investigation report carried out by the Office of the Director of Public Procurement (ODPP), which alleged abuse of office.
While other countries are making strides, Malawi’s development remains stunted because money meant for development is being chewed by a few people dressed in the clothes of leaders.

The most stupid Auditor General in the history of Malawi is Kamphasa. We dont need Baker Ujeni to audit water board. What type of auditors do we have in MW if an institution like BWB cant be audited by Malawians. Which other country in the world has sunk so low? Surely we cant perform these audits? We need proper leaders not the JB type who thoughts the British can do a better job when British public servants are busy stealing from their treasury. Looks like Malawi is riddled with corruption. Only outsiders will be able to get to the truth. The DPP government and APM must know that it is just a matter of time before they are shown to be at the root of the corruption. The sword of Damocles hangs over them. That report has just too many flaws not befitting a reputable audit firm.. it implicated people based on hearsay and LinkedIn profiles which were not authenticated!! Do they for instance know how many John Bandas we have here in Malawi? Their report watered-down attempts to prosecute genuine cashgaters by including people who are not involved. These are serious clowns and whoever is hiring them will be held accountable.

consumers should be careful of bloated bills. I heard from an old employee that when auditors come through, finance people usually say most money is still with customers that havent paid their bills.

This is Mutharika’s tactics to prove to donors that his government is taking decisive action to curb corruption. However Mutharika must be made aware that Malawians and donors are waiting for Mutharika himsel to bring back the billions that his brother Bingu and he stole. Ask yourselves why has Mutharika never made known why donors are withholding aid. It’s because donors want him to repay the stolen money to government.
