Blantyre -Zomba road opening deferred to Friday
The official opening ceremony for the Blantyre -Zomba road which was scheduled for Monday, January 19th 2015 has been shifted to Friday for unspecified reasons.
However, State House officials say the reason for the postponement and other details “will be announced later.”
The 59.62 kilometer road has been reconstructed with funding from the African Development Bank (AFDB) and the Malawi Government to the tune of over K5.5 billion.
The project started on 19 March 2012 and was supposed to run until 18 March 20 14 which is 24 months.
But as project progressed rains impacted heavily on the project which completely cut off the flow of traffic between Blantyre and Zomba.
During the period motorists from either sides of the road were forced to use longer routes, such as passing through equally muddy roads in Chiradzulu or passing through Machinga, Balaka and Zalewa.
