Some of the council workers said they are finding it hard to make ends meet.

“When we press for our salaries, we are threatened with letters of dismissal,” said one of them asking for anonymity in fear of losing a job.

District commissioner Bester Mandele confirmed some workers, especially maarket masters and revenue collectors have not received their salaries for four months.

“But these people are lazy, they steal council money, they are under collecting revenue making it impossible for us to have enough salaries for them,” he said.

The council needs K3.3 million every month to pay its workers.

However senior council members including the district commissioner are paid from Capital Hill in Lilongwe.

I want to agree with the DC these market fee collectors steal a lot of money. Try to make sudden visits as inspectors at the market, you will see how much they steal. Malawi can’t develop this way.
