MCP’s Chakwera cautioned over ‘power obsession’

Malawians have taken up on social media to caution Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera over the obsession of power after he attacked the police for blocking thousands of his supporters ferried across Lilongwe to welcome him at Kamuzu International Airport from Mexico recently.

Writing on Facebook, many Malawians were of the view that the tendency of ferrying party sympathizers to a focal point where they would dance and praise shower a political party leader was archaic.

“I thought this was gone with Kamuzu. I thought this was gone with Bakili, Bingu or JB. I never expected that LZ (Lazarus Chakwera) can be into it. This is bad for our democracy,” wrote one.

The police blocked thousands of Chakwera and MCP supporters clad in party attire as they pushed to enter Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe to welcome their leader, and the police sited security as the main reason for their refusal to allow the MCP sympathizers.

Of late, President Peter Mutharika also seems to be obsessed with power, the power of numbers at his political rallies.

In Nchalo, Chikhwawa and during the opening of tobacco market in Lilongwe, Mutharika boasted of huge numbers of people attending his functions, saying this was a sign that his party was powerful.

He ordered the state controlled Malawi Broadcasting Corporation to beam the people so that Malawians know that the ruling Democratic Progressive Party was still powerful and relevant to Malawi politics.

When has people welcoming their leader become” a power obssession ” problem? The people cautioning our beloved Reverend seem to miss a loint here. In any case Chakwera ks the keader of opposition and has the right to be welcomed by his supporters jjst like any leader in Malawi.
Security problem? Why only Chakwera? Nanga enawa akunenepa ndi misonkho yathuwa, samalandilidwa pa airport?

I think the writer is psychiatric in the sense that he knows very well that the same police doesnt prohibit DPP supporters when welcoming APM from abroad, why having sicky mind and biased reporting on a major media like Nyasatimes. He deserves to be a politician not a reporter.

You wanted a person of Chakwera’s caribre to come from such a historical, successful trip outside as parentless child? Your thought is void and substanceless. Ecpect alot more to happen. This is just a drop in the sea. Mumina pamodzi ndi amene akutumaniwo.

airports are security areas. ban escorting or welcoming crowds from airports; do so for everyone including sitting state presidents, unless proper public security measures of police crowd control are in place. A reasonable number of escort party or welcome party for one individual could be defined (like 10 to 20 people). The party members can meet their leaders outside the security areas (like airports). why not use the stadiums in the city for such welcomes and bye byes?

  22. Jelbin Mk says:

This is the most stupid article i have ever read on nyasatimes followed by that of chizimba. The heading and the content do not match not at all, i thought they the writer was going to ask Chakwera to avoid to now and then mentioning the resignation of Peter, coz that at least could be attributed to power obsession not this trash he has written here. Worse enough he has even said “this is not good for our democracy”, which democracy are those foolish social media talking about? At least they could have condemned the police for defeating the ends of democracy which is guaranteed in our constitution as the right to assembly. Don’t cheat Malawians because they are now eye opened they know what is right and wrong.

  23. mlomwe says:

u are afrad wth chakwera now why 2019 is far oooo I think u r knowing that failing to do wat malawians need zopusa khani ikhale ya chakwera osakamba za yemwe amayiwala zomwe wabwerera ku kanengo uja

  24. The Analyst says:

    O……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………O
These social media users are clearly misinformed . . .
. . . So if you go outside the country and find family and friends lying in wait to welcome you on return; it means you are powerful or hunger for power? This is lame thinking!

    You see . . .
. . . While powerful people get decorated and recognised most of the time; the reverse is not always true, i.e. decoration and recognition do not always symbolise power.
. . . Thus, it makes very little sense, if at all any; to measure Chakwera’s power-hungriness by having people welcome him at the airport or anywhere; rather power for presidency.
    ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
Only if these stray social-media users were in right frame of mind and . . .
. . . discussed and condemned Chakwera’s abandonment of regular preaching for presidency; and established, discussed and condemned his involvement in WhatApp coup plot or any attempt to seize power unceremoniously; . . .
would their discussion about Chakwera being power-hungry, be sensible.

Otherwise, while they may have good intentions to establish that Chakwera is power-hungry, the reasons for backing up their claim are clearly weak and malapropos.

  28. watereka says:

  29. Patriot says:

Biaised critics. Nanga what about DPP which ferries anthu mpaka ku Night of Prayer. Even in America, Barrack Obama has supporters that goes to airports to welcome him. Ma critics amenewo are probably coming from the Demonic Political Party followers

  30. Mapwevupwevu says:

    Power hungry former reverend!

  31. youna says:

    Zankutu!

  32. Concerned Malawian says:

I thought Nyasatimes was better. But I can see DPP has infiltrated it. How can you say Chakwera is power hungry & he ferried ppo to welcome him at the airport? Between Chakwera & Mutharika who has the capacity to do that? Has the police ever prevented ppo who go to welcome Peter Mutharika from entering the airport bcoz of security reasons? The govt uses parastatal vehicles to ferry ppo to Peter’s rallies. Why not write about that abuse of power & fraud?

  33. BOKHO says:

Yes agree with no 2 this is very stupid by this writer of this article as it does not make sense to accuse Chakwera for being welcomed by his supporters at the air port. This is completely rubbish. MCP does not use tax payers money this is my contribution money that they use to attend and welcome Peter Mthalika at the airport. Stop nonsense now or face a chop you DPP.

  34. Myao says:

Rather say its archaic to have a 1.5km presidential convoy full of handclappers draining hundreds litres of fuel when ur hospitals have no medicine and ur granaries have no staple for your people!!
Villagers and loafers will always be ferried to political rallies not to mention Fake Prophetic gatherings-thats extreme stupidity than archaic.

  35. Ze Roberto says:

I hope police will use the same reasoning of security to prevent DPP supporters from thronging the airport. Let’s wait and see.
