South Africa-bound Malawians attacked by hippo in Limpopo River

A group of Malawian immigrants to South Africa was attacked by a hippopotamus in Limpopo River as they tried to cross using an illegal entry point and a five year old girl has gone missing since the attack two weeks ago.

Zimbabwe’s state owned newspaper, The Herald, reported on Monday that some of the Malawians sustained minor injuries in the encounter.

The paper quotes Limpopo Police Spokesperson, Colonel Ronel Otto, saying that the girl and her mother were part of a group of 11 Malawians who wanted to enter South Africa illegally near Beitbridge border post on the night of 31 December.

“Along the way they were chased by a hippopotamus and some sustained minor injuries. They ran away in all directions and since then the five-year-old girl went missing.

“Despite extended searches nothing has been found yet. Members of the SAP [South African Police] Search and Rescue Unit as well as the Air Wing intensified search operations during the weekend,” Otto said.

The mother of the girl reportedly tried to look for her without success for a week until she resigned to fate and reported the matter to the police.

The paper reports that there are over 200 illegal entry points across the Limpopo River which illegal immigrants use to evade official entry points into South Africa.

The police spokesperson says some illegal immigrants using the unofficial routes are attacked by hippos and crocodiles while others drown or are waylaid by criminals who rob, rape or kill.

Those are evident socioeconomic indicators that a country is deep economic mess. You don’t need a study on that. Yet the leadership is fast asleep in comfort

Malawi is a sorry state. CDC scam, cashgate, Jet gate, MEC gate, maize gate, name it gate……. yet we have the leaders who just give a lip service on the podium. If it were somewhere else such leaders would have been forced to resign… kaya ndi minister kaya who ever if not shot dead because they have proved to be useless.

It’s a sad situation loosing lives in this manner all due to poverty. Can we Malawians figure out the major cause of this fatal situation which has befallen us ? What is the major problem leading to the down fall of our economy ? We surely need to rectify this problem.

We are in tough times! Please don’t blame these people for going down south. Some Bus Operators are doing it as a business. Damping people to thugs at the Boarder. They are then kidnapped and taken to Johannesburg where they demand a Ramson of not less than R3,000 per person. If friends or relatives don’t pay the amount, they are victimised by beating or either killed. This is done because Passports are being destroyed by RSA government. People are barned from entering RSA for 5 years, payment of fees to reverse this was stopped a year ago. Now the Malawi Government is refusing to give these seasoned travellers new passports forcing people to resort to the last choice. May the innocent soul of this child, R.I.P.

Truth be told be mature and reason like a human being. Malawi Government can not give each and everyone a bag of money at all. We Malawians we have to work up and start producing products for sale even farming is productive than going to RSA. Let them meet a wider opening mouth of hippos, murderers,Rapists, gangsters or even the deeper water should take them away.

  12. truth be told says:

Blame Malawi government for failing to care for its citizens hence people are embarking on unwanted journeys for better life. All our taxes are going to ndata and other pockets. Shame on you Dpp!!!!
