MCP chairpersons challenge Chakwera

Four chairpersons of main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) have challenged their leader Lazarus Chakwera, stopping him from making appointments and holding meetings.

In a three page letter, the chairpersons accuse Chakwera of nepotism and lacking skills to tackle administrative issues in the country’s oldest party.

The chairpersons, Stowell Gondwe, Bauleni Mkweza, Baza Kaunda and Abi Jana say Chakwera has vested more powers in what they called party management instead of the national executive committee which they say is flawed procedurally according to the MCP constitution.

They say they have brought the issue to courts.

Party spokesperson Jessie Kabwila said she has received a copy of the letter and identified the four as bonafide regional leaders of the party.

“This shows there is intraparty democracy in MCP. The party administration is working on these grievances. Issues they have raised are worth our attention, issues of nepotism are very serious, we will definitely respond,” said Kabwila.

She said top party officials will soon meet to address the issues raised by the four chairperson.

Kabwila would not give time frame as to when the party will give the chairpersons the feedback on the matters they have raised.

Among other issues, the chairpersons accused Chakwera of being slow in responding to important issues affecting the party.
