Civo suspend coach Jegwa as Charles Manda take charge
Civo United have suspended coach Milias Jegwa Pofera as head coach for the government sponsored Malawi’s flagship league side following uncharacteristic start to the season.
The club officials confirmed that Pofera has been put on the sidelines awaiting a decision from the sponsors over the flamboyant youthful coach’s future at the club.
Former Mighty Wanderers international defender and Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Technical Officer Charles Manda who was hired four weeks ago as Technical Director to steady the sinking ship, has been appointed caretaker coach.
“We have directed that coach Milias Pofera should not handle any football related activity at the club as we have initiated investigations into the team’s poor performance in the first round,” said the official.
“This has been done while we are waiting for a decision from our sponsors on his position.”
The team, which has been among the big four in Malawi, has been struggling since the surprise decision was made to recruit him as a replacement for under-qualified Oscar Kaunda.
Kaunda, who broke Civo’s decade-long silverware drought, was one of the victims of Football Association of Malawi’s Club Licence drive.
Pofera made his name while at Dedza Young Soccer Stars who were relegated to Malawi’s second football league tier last season.
He was also been sought by champions Nyasa Big Bullets before agreeing a two-year contract at Civo.
The team is currently languishing in the bottom half of the 16-team league and were booted out of Carlsberg Cup and Presidential Cup in the early stages.
