Lilongwe Sex workers alliance elects new office bearers: To fight against HIV
Lilongwe Sex Workers Alliance has elected new officer bearers during a meeting held at Lilongwe District Council which was facilitated by Family Planning Association of Malawi (FPAM) and National Aids Commission (NAC) with funding from Family Health International 360.
Speaking before the elections NAC’s District Coordinating Officer responsible for the central region Eric Dakamawa said the alliance was very key especially in the fight against HIV as it provides an entry point for various interventions targeted at sex workers.
“Our aim is to utilise structures at hot spot, district and national level when delivering various interventions. Since sex workers are among the high risk areas, their active involvement will greatly improve progress in the fight against HIV,” said Dakamawa.
Chairperson for Lilongwe District Aids Coordination Committee George Mussa said his committee looked forward to working with the new officer bearers.
During the polls 32 hot spot representatives from Lilongwe Urban and rural elected Lucy Mtajili as chairperson, Chisomo Malichi as her deputy, Caroline Makuwira as secretary, Angella Tchauya as vice secretary, Violet Banda as treasurer and Kelita Banda as vice treasurer.
“My committee looks forward to working with your committee. You will be part and parcel of our committee and together, we will be implementing various HIV interventions to reduce the HIV prevalence in Lilongwe,” said Mussa.
Mtajili in her acceptance speech said she will work hard to ensure that the Lilongwe Sex Workers Alliance stands out in reducing HIV prevalence in the district.
“I will serve the district alliance to ensure that every member benefits from various HIV and health interventions available. I will work hard to ensure that the committee makes positive contributions towards the elimination of HIV in Lilongwe and Malawi,” said Mtajili.

There is nothing wrong for the sex workers to hold elections and I really support this grouping because its objective is to fight against the deadly HIV AIDS. BRAVO MABEBI .
