The accident happened on Wednesday afternoon following heavy downpour accompanied by hail stom experienced in the city.

Speculation went rife on social media  that death toll increased following the incident, but Blantyre police said there has been no death recorded.

“Fortunately, there weren’t people that died but a number were injured by the tree collapse,” spokesperson for Blantyre Police Station Andrew Mayawo said.

Mayawo said police are yet to establish the number of casualties and mini buses that have been damaged.

He said victims were taken to Queen Elizabeth Central hospital for treatment.

The hopsital administrator Themba Mhango said only a driver of the worst hit minibus remains hospitalised as other victims were treated as  outpatients.
