120 MRA, Malawi police officers raid Kamlepo’s house
Firebrand Rumphi east legislator Kamlepo Kalua has lambasted the President Peter Mutharika government for unleasing over 120 Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) and police officers Wednesday night to his house to search for unpaid duty vehicles and guns.
In an interview on Thursday morning, Kalua, a fearless critic of President Mutharika and his government said he would not be forced to surrender and be silenced.
“I am told they had instructions to pick me up, kill me. Imagine, they were trying to break my house doors as if vehicles are kept in a house,” he said.
The legislator said he was in Lilongwe at the time of the incident on Education parliamentary committee business.
He therefore said it was illegal to attempt to arrest him when he was on parliamentary business.
Kalua said he was told the MRA officers were combing for evidence on evasion of duty of his vehicles.
He said contrary to what the MRA officials think, he has two vehicles which he bought duty free as a privilege for being a member of parliament.
MRA spokesperson Steve Kapoloma asked for more time before commenting as he needed to consult the officers who effected the operation.
MRA has pounced on Times Group and Boniface Dulani’s office before on politically motivated operation.
