Five Salima District Council officials sent on forced leave over corruption
Salima district council has sent five of its officials on a forced leave on allegations of corrupt practices.
Confirming the development, Salima District Council spokesperson Watson Maingo said that the suspected five people are alleged to have stolen and misused millions of kwacha’s in the revenue collection department.
Maingo said the council came to realize about the mismanagement of the resources after an audit report.
“You are aware that revenue collection is one of the best income generation activity in most of the district councils in the country. So, after noting that the council was not making progress in terms of revenue collection, we opted to have an audit in the revenue department which has showed that there are some loopholes which are used to misuse incomes.”
“The revenue we are talking about here are those that are collected from Business Licenses and market levy, so instead of managing the revenue collected appropriately, the five officials took advantage of the revenue collector to misuse the funds,” he said.
Maingo further said that such malpractices are pulling back development activities in the district and the country as a whole as such there is need for sensitization and civic education on the evils of corruption.
However, the council has not yet established the total amount of money that have been misused as the audit is still under way.
