Five handed K100 000 fine for drink-driving
The Lilongwe Senior Magistrate Court has slapped five drivers with K100,000 fines each for driving under the influence of beer which is contrary to Section 128(1) (a) as read with section 128 (9) of the Road Traffic Act.
The Police traffic personnel conducted random breath tests on them and established the offence hence the Court demanded the drivers to pay a fine of MK 100,000.00 or in default to serve a custodial sentence of four months Imprisonment with Hard Labour (IHL).
Drivers of the five motor vehicles: a Volkswagen Jetta, Toyota saloon, a Volkswagen Polo, a Mercedes Benz, and a Mazda Vellisa, bearing registration numbers BU 9101, DA 5745, BT 729, MJ 5947 and BU 7779 which have all paid the fine.
Nolliettie Chihana, the Public Relations Officer for Central Region Police Headquarters said that police will continue arresting people who will be caught under the influence of beer or any narcotic drug.
“We are advising the general public to desist from this malpractice in order to reduce road accidents happening in our country,” Said Chihana.
The Senior Resident Magistrate Shyrene Yona passing the judgment observed that driving a motor vehicle under the influence of beer or any narcotic drug is dangerous to other road users as well.
