Lilongwe Water Board handles water mixed with sewega in Area 18A
Lilongwe Water Board (LWB) has managed to contain water contamination situation that occurred in one section of Area 18A in the capital city of Lilongwe after a sewer overflow sipped into its supply pipe.
On Tuesday morning LWB customers in Area 18A particularly those that reside along Salima Street experienced water contamination emergency and LWB workers rushed in to contain the situation.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday afternoon, the Board said the contamination was as the result of a sewer system (owned by Lilongwe City Council) that was emitting cesspool water which eventually sipped into the LWB’s supply pipe.
“Lilongwe Water Board (LWB) would like to inform it’s valued customers that it is equally saddened with the incident of water contamination that has happened today (Tuesday 18/07/2017), in some parts of Area 18A (Salima Street),” said the Board in the statement.
According to the Board, the sewer water sipped into an underground water supply pipe that burst early Tuesday morning.
“After noting this, LWB rushed to close the supply line and started working on the broken pipe. The water supply line has been maintained and disinfected and is now being monitored to make sure it is thorough cleaned.”
Meanwhile, Lilongwe Water Board officers are expected to visit each household in the affected area to test their supply to verify if it’s suitable for human consumption.
And as precautionary measure, consumers have been advised not to use tap water up to tomorrow when they will be notified to do so to allow the Board to clean up the affected pipes.
LWB has started supplying clean water to the affected customers through mobile water bowser.
“The Board is assuring customers in the area that it is doing its best to restore clean and potable supply of water. The Board, regrets any inconvenience this may have caused.”
