Mutharika meets DPP officials, chiefs to plot DPP victory in 2019

President Peter Mutharika has been meeting some ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in the north in order to help ensure the party’s victory in 2019 Tripartite Elections.

Mutharika has been busy at the Mzuzu State Lodge since he went there to attend the Ngoni powerful cultural event, Umtheto.

Nyasa Times can reveal that on Wednesday, Mutharika met some chiefs from the north and pleaded with them to influence their subjects to vote for the DPP during the elections in 2019.

Both DPP publicist Nicholas Dausi and presidential spokesperson Mgeme Kalilani confirmed Mutharika has been holding meetings in Mzuzu with different stakeholders, including party members.

If you do not like him APM just know that there are others there who like and support him greatly —– learn from the bible there were people who did not like him and there were also who like him and followed his teachings it’s a matter of one’s choice basi, just leave castigations and insults aside — God will successfully give us his chosen Leader in 2019 that’s why is is name is JAHOVAH JIREH the LORD who provides.

  5. But the issue of quota system is sensitive. One can win North and lose Central and South. So it must be treated carefully. One has to strike a right balance.

    1. Quota System is not a sensitive issue but a source of conflict. It is just a policy whose implementation is meant to purge a specific people in a specific catchment area. It targets communities and social groups that are always encouraged by their parents to excel in education or to get jobs through merit. Besides, Quota System curtails the construction of more universities or education infrastructure development that would, at most, cater for those areas who are at a disadvantage because of the stiff competitors from those who excel. It sacrifices merit and competence. It throws excellence out of the window as it dwells heavily on inferior candidates because backers of the policy want to create the so called “balance over more qualified candidates”. Quota System is another form of discrimination since it prevents specific social groups from accessing education.

      Instead of helping those social groupings that are failing to excel, much energy is directed to prevent those who are excelling. Parents in areas where the performance of children are found wanting need to take a leaf from areas where children are doing well. Parental guidance is crucial.

      As along as Quota System is in place, universities from Malawi will never be in the top 100 universities in Africa because of the ongoing support of a system which is responsible for the current mediocrity. In short mediocrity is not an issue in Quota System. How I wish there was Linthipe University of Agriculture, Bembeke Polytechnic, Mphunzi College of Nursing and Mua College of Education so as to accommodate students from Dedza and beyond so as to do away with this Quota System which is evil with its evil intentions from its backers.

  10. Northerners are very objective when it comes to voting. Show substance in what you do and you will get their votes. As of now I do not see DPP getting substantial votes in the North. DPP willingly let North slip out of its hands by introducing the evil quota system which without measuring words, its former President Bingu Wa Mutharika openly said was introduced because northers were dominating in academics.

    1. Issue of quota system did not start with Bingu it started long time ago with Kamuzu. The whole purpose was to bring equality in education. I do not understand those who are against quota system. In all fairness northerners shud be the first ppo to appreciate this why? The whole of north population on average for the students who sit for MSCE are not more than 35,000 as compared to central and south where on average ranges between 80,000 and 90,000 in which case the later two regions do have a high passing rate than north looking at its population. Now govt put a deliberate policy of quota system that regardless of the region having large number of students and consequently having high passing rate but all districts in the regions shud equal share when it comes to college selection hence quota. So you ppo whom you make noise on these forums please its better to have substantive facts other than making criticisms for the sake of it. Another point i wish to make is consider why ratios are applied; the reason is simple because it would be unfair for a family with five children get 5 pails of maize the same as the family with one child. So if you may wish you the northeners shud be given say 15%, center 40% and south 45% according to population then this would mean fair treatment if may like it. But all in all the late Bingu said the quota system was introduced to accommodate all types of tribes the while country from each district due to limited places in colleges and went on saying that the only solution to quota system is to construct more colleges so that students shud all be accomodated and thats why govt is busy building new colleges. Bravo govt move on!!!!!!

      1. The way you have defended Quota System shows that you have dwelt much on the origin of the students or where they come from. Nothing has been mooted out on excellence or performance. Thus excellence is not an issue in the Quota System. That System breeds mediocrity and is a grave injustice to the intellectuals whether they are from Zomba, Nsanje, Ntchisi, Lilongwe or Karonga. Besides, Quota System is facilitating the appointment of “square pegs in round holes” and vice versa, thereby reducing the quality of teaching and its outcomes.

        It is important that everyone regardless of where he or she hails from should be judge based on intellect. Those areas where students do not excel should be put to scrutiny to figure out their short falls and assisted wherever possible so that their performance is brought to the level of the standard brought about by those who are being removed from accessing education because of the implementation of Quota System. That can be achieved if there is total commitment from both parents and politicians, who should be restrained from coalescing with ethnicity through the use of discriminatory policies such as the one being defended here. I applaud the initiatives taken by certain chiefs in Mangochi who have formulated by laws to reprimand parents who will not encourage their children to pursue education. Long time ago during Nyasaland era, a certain T/A in Rumphi declared compulsory education within his jurisdiction. No wonder Rumphi excels in education endeavours, and one student with 14 points is alleged to have recently been left out because the cut off point for that district is 12 points. Look at that!! Sheer jealousy!! Mangochi chiefs, you have my support.

    2. Let me be a bit controversial here and posit that northerners are not really objective when it comes to voting. During the hey day of AFORD the north voted for AFORD no matter what. When AFORD collapsed as a result of greed by the party hierarchy, the north lost its holding centre. Since then the north has displayed opportunistic voting tendencies inclining towards the party in power or the party that looks like might get into power. In order words, the North votes generally votes for a place at the table even when that maybe against its interests e.g. when it went for DPP in 2009

  16. The campaign period is an interesting time for politicians…suddenly every tribe and region becomes important. Even the North which the DPP as a party introduced the QUOTA system to “trim it to size” has now become a vital source of votes! My message as a Northerner to DPP is: please go where you get all the officials and where you give all the government contracts…ie the Lhomwe belt. These are your people and beneficiaries of your policies as a Party. As of the for our chiefs in the North please eat the money when you are given but don’t tell our people to vote for a Party that introduced the Quota system to kill the future of our children and makes the future of their tribe bright!!

People always castigate northerners, but when it comes to elections, their votes are needed. it seems this time around the north has already made up its mind, whether you like it or not, they are not voting DPP. Forget about what chiefs tell you. When it comes to voting, I just love people from the north. They owe no allegiance to anyone. They are unlike those of us who come from the land of Ngongoliwa.
