Catholic Church mobilizes it’s faithful to take a stand against DPP attack

The Catholic Church  in Malawi will Tuesday  afternoon hold a special program on its Radio Maria Station to respond to a recent attack against Pope Francis.

Pope Francis

The program which will start at 4:30 PM local time follows reports that showed a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) operative, Hophmally Makande, telling a rally on Sunday that the party will not heed calls for  President Peter Mutharika to step down in account of old age unless the pontiff  leads the way.

In an announcement circulated on social media, the influential Catholic Church is asking whether the reference is appropriate and respectful to the Pontiff who, unlike Mutharika, is not seeking a new term.

“Listen to Radio Maria Malawi today Tuesday 28 August from 4.30 PM when we will discuss what some politician said at a rally that are an insult to the Papacy and disrespectful to the Catholic faithfuls,” says the announcement.

Speaking to the crowd, Makande queried DPP spokesperson, Nicholous Duasi, a church-going  Catholic regarding the Pope’s age:

A Dausi muli pompano, anthu akuti a Mutharika atule pansi udindo chifukwa akula, Papa ali ndi aka 10? Papa ali ndi aka 10? Papa ndi wamkulu kuposa a Mutharika ndiye ayambe ndi Papayo kutula pansi udindo wake (Mr. Dausi, ir right here, people are saying Mutharika must step down due to old age, is the Pope 10 years old? Is the Pope 10 years old? Mutharika is younger than the Pope so he will not step down unless the Pope does).”

Leonarcd Chimbanga, one of DPP’s most vibrant, young politicians  had no kind words for Makande, saying  the remarks were “ horrifying, stupid, uncalled for.”

Makande is a recent DPP new comer  from the then ruling People’s Party (PP). He made his political fortunes as a UDF operative during that party’s reign before joining the now defunct National Democratic Alliance (NDA) which was formed by another current DPP new comer, Brown Mpinganjira.

My fellow Malawians I think in the whole discussion about age, something went wrong. Is it not more about that we need change, and renew, what gets immediately associated with young? Since beginning of multiparty democracy in Malawi (some even before) we get ruled by the same , now more and more seasoned leaders, following their fortune to become soon or later member of the actual ruling party merly for there own sake not for our all common good! Mr Hoghmally Makande is just one example par excellence! But what we need as leaders is not only young: because more… Read more »

The pope is chilombo chanting khumi which is mentioned in the book of the Rev its very unfortunate that the Catholic church is leading multitude to hell. Unfortunately its only the holy spirit which can open our eyes those who are perishing are the one’s making a lot of noise. Makande is right pope Francis is just another human being who can be criticized. He has done a lot of evil to the world yet the perishing multitude are worshipping him. He is in the news on CNN cover-up on homosexual bishops. Catholicism is not a church but a mafia… Read more »

Mr Banda, God will forgive you because you don’t know what you are saying. Ellen White anakupusitsani kwambiri kotero kuti you are not able to use your brain. Think about this carefully. You speak or write as if you have no brains. If you don’t have anything to say just remain quiet otherwise you have just succeeded in exposing your highest degree of ignorance of the Bible. You and the one who taught you what you are saying now about the Pope should do a lot of soul searching on the topic. Who says the Pope is God? Please give… Read more »

Some of these comments are totally useless and ignorantly said, Pope is the leader of Catholic Church, and not a Democratic Malawi where leaders are chosen democratically. Leave this issue to catholics to react but what i know is that DPP knows well that such sentiments by Makande are a political siucide to DPP. Catholics respect their leaders including the Pope just like muslims respect their leader in Saud Arabia, and there is no problem with that. Lets not encourage religious politics here in Malawi. Makande has made a big mistake hence he has rushed to Times again to apologise.… Read more »
