Mtambo hits at ‘childsish’ DPP legislators for calling HRDC ‘terrorists’
Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) chairperson Timothy Mtambo has flatly refused to apologise to government members of parliament whom he described as childish.
Mtambo described the legislators sitting on the government side childish after they walked out of the House on Wednesday in protest against the presence of Mtambo and HRDC vice chairperson Gift Trapence who were seated in the public gallery.
At the start of business in the House on Wednesday afternoon, minister of Information and government spokesperson Mark Botomani demanded an apology from Mtambo over the remarks.
However, Mtambo has been unapologetic.
“We will not apologize. We don’t owe anybody an apology. Actually it is Honourable Mark Botomani and all the DPP members of parliament who should apologize to us,” said Mtambo.
Mtambo said the DPP legislators were childish to abandon proceeding in the House in protest against the presence of the HRDC officials.
He also said the DPP legislators were childish to call the HRDC officials terrorists.
Security at parliament build was on Wednesday stepped up as both the Malawi Defence Force and the police brought in more officers.
No one was allowed in in the public gallery on Wednesday following security concerns of the DPP legislators.
But Mtambo said the HRDC officials were in the House on Wednesday to follow proceedings from the public gallery and were allowed in after security checks and clearance.
