CSO calls for Malawi presidential jet sale probe: Cdedi against selective justice
A civil rights group Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (Cdedi) has called for a probe into the sale of a presidential jet by the Joyce Banda administration in 2013.

Cdedi says the Lazarus Chakwera government must probe the matter despite the fact that Banda is part of the Tonse alliance led government.
Acting executive director for the organization, Sylvester Namiwa says he is surprised that the current administration is only focusing on tracking down ills allegedly committed by the immediate past Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) regime only when it was obvious that some people connected to the Tonse Alliance government are equally culpable..
“Cdedi further wants truth exposed on the Mponela bed-gate scandal where beds were reportedly moved at night from Mponela Hospital to Mzimba District Hospital,” he said.
Former state vice president Khumbo Kachali, who is now in Tonse alliance was allegedly involved in the bedgate.
Namiwa said Chakwera’s administration should avoid advancing selective justice.
“As the Tonse Alliance [government] is busy cleaning up the mess the country is in, CDEDI would like to add onto the list the following issues that generated public interest in the past, but were not conclusively investigated and dealt with. The Tonse Alliance government should consider probing the sale of the presidential jet, which was bought by the late Bingu Wa Mutharika administration in 2009. The presidential jet was sold by the former president Dr. Joyce Banda’s administration, but Malawians need to know how the proceeds from this deal benefitted the country,” said Namiwa.
He further urges government to consider compensating Malawians who sustained injuries and lost property during the one-year demonstrations between May 2019 and May 2020.
The victims launched complaints at various police stations, but they are yet to be served.
Namiwa says CDEDI believes the Tonse government stance on cleaning up Malawi can only be taken seriously if the current administration was seen to be striking a balance in pursuing issues that involve both the current and previous regimes, and not the selective justice we are currently witnessing.
The Presidential Executive Assistant and Press Secretary, Sean Kampondeni, referred Nyasa Times to the Minister of Information Gospel Kazako who was not available for a comment.

Why are we hearing nothing of the Midnight Six?
NOT NOW MY FRIEND… WHERE WERE YOU ALL THIS TIME WHEN DPP WAS IN GOVERNMENT WITH THAT ISSUE.
LETS SORT OUT THIS ISSUE ABOUT THE MONEY THAT YOUR MASTERS HAVE STOLEN THE PAST 6 YEARS TRILLIONS AND TRILLIONS
Inu Ndiye tikugwirizana chifukwa asanabadwe chakwela panali apitala bwanji simumawakumbutsa apitala anu kuti afufuze iwenso ukuti namiwa ndiiwe wakuba ukunena pano ukufuna funding ya azungu adziti ukugwira ntchito
Cases never die. In America,FBI still reopens files of cases that reached dead end without logical conclusions. In Kenya, victims of torture and murder by the British colonial masters received reparations not immediately in the Jomo Kenyatta’s government, but many years later in the Kibaki’s government. In Malawi, activists tried to claim the same during APM government many years later after successive governments of Dr HKB, Muluzi, Bingu and JB. Therefore nothing wrong to unearth what happened to the sales proceeds of the jet.
Foseki
You kept quite for 6 years and now you are making noise. Infact Mbuyanu Uja wopanda Mamu Mkamwa left the the issue as there there was no evidence to implicate JB.
Mind you APM is a proffesser. The issue with the sale affected some of the top DPP officials involved in maize gate.
Why didn’t you ask stinking dpp government to investigate? They were in office for 6 years (including the stolen year) and DID NOT find anything or unless they were busy STEALING THEMSELVES.
‘phwando la akakowa’
Usaiwale kut palibe cchipani chomwe Hina panga chtukuko kuposa DPP
Foolishness abounds in Malawi. The bed gate is not an issue of stealing. It was relocation of resources from one hospital to another probably to impress the Donors who were visiting the receiving hospital
Makes sense .
DPP were at odds with JB for a long time, if DPP knew that JB had a case to answer on the sale of the jet they would have investigated it……please President Chakwera do not get distracted by these DPP mercenaries masquerading as human rights activists.
The Tonse alliance priority as far as clearing the rubble is concerned should be the corruption that happened during the past 6 years….
Any corruption done will be investigated even for the past 10 years. Sorry, Malawi is now changed for the better. Anyone involved in corruption will be investigated.
Never made sense to sale a jet and use proceeds to buy maize or MDF weapons. JB must account for the proceeds. Why was the sale not done through open tender? Was it cleared by the public assets disposal board?
DPP was in better position to look into this ,why didn’t it invesgate the issue in the first place? Tonse alliance must start with the past regime doings in the last 5yrs ndizomwe zili pamphuno.
Kikkkkkk mwati izi ndi zitiso?
The fact that the stupid Destructive and Plundering Party government did not investigate means that they know there is nothing to investigate. DPP was in govt for 5 years and another one stolen year. Yet they did not investigate something that happened 7 years ago! Go back kwa ambuyako akutumawo.
DPP did not want to be branded as politically persecuting Joyce Banda who run away to USA. Chakwera should clear the rubble because he promised to.
I think those who have no interest in the issue of jet and other issues are not patriotic Malawians. When JB left the country for US the police produced that showed her involvement in the cashgate and we even heard there was a warrant of arrest for her but deliberately shelved it in the interest of peace. When she came back DPP did not want people to be saying the arrest was politically motivated that why she was left free. And Chakwera made a mention of her to persecuted. Therefore, we are saying, yes, dpp was a bad govt. Now, we have a good govt willing to any kind of criminality. Arrest all DPP gurus who were corrupt. But then should include everybody not only DPP. We have JB with the issue of cashgate and jetgate. We have people who killed the policeman at Msundwe, those who destroyed DPP offices at Mponela, those who stoned late Dean Josiah Banda, those who torched police offices in different parts of the country, those who torched the house of Obama Chiumia in Mzuzu, those who beat a journalist at COMESA Hall during the 2019 elections, those who shot a boy in Machinga. If you check most of the issues here, you will see that those who are suspected to have committed similar case in the dpp have been arrested.
Again, if you say the CSO which advocating impartial administration of justice to be partisan, then, what do you say about HRDC? Is it not partisan? I gree with you, those who plundered our money and criminal cases should be brought to book but not one sided. We wanted change. The change includes the rule of law to everybody.
On this one, I am in total agreement with CDEDI. No room for selective justice, otherwise this cleaning up exercise will quickly lose the trust and confidence of Malawians.
Probe the jet sale issue. Probe the Chasowa murder yo its final conclusion as you are doing with the Njaunju murder.
APM noted that there was no issue here affecting JB.
Why don’t you ask Mbuyanu Uja wopanda Mamu because I know you that you are often in contact with him.
Yes, JB should give us back the plane and thereafter spend a few years in jail. With hard labour. A very crooked woman!
I bet this CSO is a DPP-backed operation.
But why didn’t the DPP regime prosecute this crook?? It had all the time. Mxii!! This is the problem with these dubious CSOs. Their only job is to serve their political masters, not us. Uchindere!
They were feasting ‘phwando la akakowa’ hence they didn’t remember about the issue of the jet unfortunately!
Namiwa – relax. ASK DPP to give you their investigation not Tonse.
Foseki
The investigation was done by the DPP under the wise leadership of APM and found no case
DPP COULD HAVE PROBED THIS ,WHERE WERE YOU.YOU COULD HAVE ASKED THEN, WHY NOW.
No selective justice. Clear the rubble regardless of where of it is. That will send a strong message to everyone that corruption is wrong.
Ask Mbuyanu to explain
He was in power for 6 years.
Ask him also about maize gate and the burning of the Office at capital hill
so this stupid sylvester namiwa and his pocket cso was not around during dpp reign to ask them to investigate those bed gate and jet gate issues? dpp ruled for 6 years after those issues and you did nothing with your pocket cso. now 7 years later you are pressurising tonse govt that has not even lasted 3 months. leave tonse govt to work according to their guidelines
Guys you are the ones who have selective justice. The jet was sold 8 years ago and dpp and pitala have been quite about including you Cso your mouth was not saying nothing.
Now because there is chakwera and Chilima, then you need to send them and push for that just because there are massive looting through dpp.
Mwanama apapa mbala zonse zaonekera ng’amba
Zikageba ndende bas.
Justice is selective. And there is nothing wrong with that. Namiwa can relocate to Timbuktu if he is not happy with our selective justice system.
Thank you CSO. Also probe why Goodall Gondwe did not cancel the corrupt deal Joyce Bsnda made with the buyer of the jet, Paramount. Paramount paid huge bribe to Goodall Gondwe to accept the used petrol boats and ysed armoured vehicles. Government regulations forbid the buying and use of used petrol boats by naval units and police. So the probe has to include Joyce Banda, Paramount and Goodall Gondwe.
That’s true Cdedi. We want the jet.
Foseki
Ask APM and Gondwe they will tell you the truth that the issue did not affect JB.
Correct. But lets deal with these plunderers first
Pa nthawi ino uwuwu si mlandu weniweni had it been it was a serious case bwenzi pano omangidwa atamangidwa kale ndi Boma lapitali
Namiwa, who should report the case to ACB other than yourself? Are you sure you can not borrow a leaf from Trapence and do as he is doing by reporting whatever you have to ACB? Awansoooooooooooooooooooooooooo amaganiza ngati ambuya awo awaaaaaaaaa!!
The sale of the jet was public but the proceeds were kept in the dark. If Malawi has to genuinely change. Let them clean up everything or else we know what they say about a bad apple
