Updated: MEC shuts down temporality as  Covid-19 hits

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has closed down for 10 days because nine officers have tested positive to Covid-19.

MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa has since confirmed in a statement

Reads the statement:“Due to the prevalence of Covid-19 positive cases among the Malawi Electoral Commission Staff, the Commission hereby announces temporary closure of its head office in Blantyre for ten (10) working days, from Monday, January 25, to Friday, February 5, 2021.

“Currently, 23 members of staff have tested positive to Covid-19. This closure is, therefore, meant to prevent further spread of the Coronavirus among the staff.”

Mwafulirwa said, in view of this development, all staff will be working from homeduring this period.

“Mandatory Covid-19 tests will be arranged on February 3 and 4, 2021 to enable all staff to check their status before returning to work on February 8, 2021,” he said.

President Lazarus Chakwera directed that public officers should work in shifts to contain the virus.

  4. It would be better if you shut until the contracts of Alufandika, Munkhondya and others have expired. We can’t be having known criminals still running our elections.
