“Let’s Join Hands and Grab This Opportunity,” Says Minister Mumba as Illovo Seeks Sugar Resellers Across Malawi

“I urge indigenous Malawians to consider this great opportunity,” said Minister of Trade and Industry Vitumbiko Mumba in reaction to Illovo Sugar (Malawi) plc’s new nationwide call for sugar resellers. “My plea is, let’s move away from individualism. Join hands and grab this opportunity.” His remarks come as Illovo Sugar opens a major tender targeting qualified individuals and businesses to become official sugar resellers across all designated territories of the country.

The move, announced through a public notice, is part of Illovo’s effort to expand its market reach, strengthen its customer service agenda, and ensure consistent delivery of sugar to stockists and wholesalers nationwide. The company is seeking enterprising partners to manage the last-mile distribution of sugar—particularly in underserved and remote areas—while also helping build long-term commercial relationships within the supply chain.

Successful applicants will be responsible for delivering sugar directly to wholesalers, recruiting new stockists, ensuring consistent product availability, and adhering to structured customer call cycles. Illovo is offering extensive support to its resellers, including compensation for delivery costs, commission rebates for achieving agreed sales targets and key performance indicators, daily technical support, and the provision of refurbished 20-foot and 40-foot containers where necessary. The company also pledges to support resellers with various marketing initiatives to drive sales in their territories.

To qualify, applicants must have between 5 and 30-tonne delivery vans and a base working capital of not less than MK300 million and not more than MK4 billion. All interested individuals or businesses are required to collect Request for Proposal documents from Illovo’s Head Office in Limbe or request electronic copies via email at [email protected]. Applications must be submitted by no later than 15th August 2025 and clearly marked “Personal and Confidential, to be opened by the addressee only,” addressed to the Reseller Selection Team, Private Bag 580, Limbe.

Minister Mumba emphasized that this is not just a business opportunity, but a national call to action for Malawians to claim their space in the formal economy. He urged citizens to form cooperatives, partnerships, or consortia rather than approaching the opportunity as individuals, stressing that collaboration would increase the likelihood of success and ensure broader economic impact. “This is our moment to transform how essential goods are distributed in this country. Let’s rise together and take control of our own economy,” he said.

As the application deadline draws near, anticipation is building among local business players, with many viewing the Illovo tender as a rare and high-value opportunity to grow their operations while contributing to national development.
