Carlsberg Malawi Cup back, sponsors Bullets and Nomads

Local brewer Carlsberg Malawi has broken its decade long absence from mainstream football sponsorship by announcing a lucrative K30 million sponsorship deal to be shared between the country’s two football giants Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers.

As if that is not enough the company has also announced that it has agreed to sponsor a new tournament to be called Carlsberg Malawi Cup.

“As Carlsberg we are proud to announce that we will sponsor Big Bullets and Wanderers for a period of one year on three conditions namely, discipline, performance and fair play. Regarding the initial amount we will disclose the figures in July,” said Carlsberg Malawi Group Marketing Manager Gwyneth Mchiela.

Inside sources told Nyasa Times the two teams will each share K15 million.

She added that at the end of the one year period, the company would go back to the drawing board to assess the performance of the teams.

Mchiela further disclosed that the sponsorship is a continuation of what the company is already doing by supporting football development at the grass root.

“Yes, we took a break from sponsoring mainline football but we have been active in terms of development of soccer through the Coca cola Massa initiative.

“Now back to the Bullets, Nomads sponsorship, what will happen is that the team that would meet the three conditions would be given long term sponsorship (to be called Carlsberg Bullets or Carlsberg Wanderers),” added Mchiela.

On his part, the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Walter Nyamilandu hailed Carlsberg for the new sponsorship saying, “the sponsorship has come at right time for both clubs and it will harmonize the arch rivalry between the two clubs.”

Meanwhile, both Wanderers and Bullets officials have promised their new sponsor that they would not tarnish the image of the Carlsberg brand by adhering to rules governing the game of football.

“Frankly, football in the country was facing bleak future, but with the coming of Carlsberg definitely the country’s dwindling football standards will be revamped,” said Nomads General Secretary David Kanyenda.

While Bullets chairman Malinda Chinyama said: “Bullets was a forgotten orphan but with the new sponsorship we will try our best not to disappoint our sponsors.”

Meanwhile, the company has disclosed that the new sponsorship deal will be unmasked early July and would coincide with the launch of the K20 million cup sponsorship; this is according to the officials.
