Dirty secrets uncovered! four food firms suspended in MBS blitz

Four Malawian food processing companies have been dramatically shut down after a sweeping surveillance blitz by the Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) uncovered serious hygiene and safety failures that officials say posed a direct risk to consumers.

The inspections, carried out between July 27 and 31, triggered immediate suspensions after MBS officers allegedly found critical non‑conformities inside production facilities — including poor sanitation, unsafe handling practices and breaches of basic food safety rules.

In a blunt announcement posted on its official Facebook page, MBS confirmed that the affected companies have been ordered to halt production until they implement corrective measures.

The watchdog did not mince words, saying the violations were severe enough to warrant decisive action.

The companies suspended are:

  1. Dilydada Limited – Cooking Oil
  2. Aimi Industries Limited – Maize Flour & Cooking Oil
  3. 88 Brothers – Cooking Oil
  4. Tianma Company Limited – Maize Flour & Cooking Oil

MBS says each firm has been slapped with quarantine fees for goods already produced and a MK2,000,000 non‑compliance fine, sending a clear message that substandard food production will not be tolerated.

The crackdown is part of a wider push by MBS to clean up the food industry, with officials warning that factory inspections and market surveillance will continue “without fear or favour” to ensure products on Malawian shelves are safe.

The suspensions have sparked concern among consumers and industry players, with many calling for tougher enforcement to prevent unsafe products from reaching the public.

MBS insists it will keep tightening the net on companies that fail to meet national standards. If you want explosive splash headlines, choose tabloid headline options.
