British High Commissioner named Patron as Malawi-UK Chamber of Commerce prepares permanent office

Leigh Stubblefield, the UK’s High Commissioner to Malawi, has been appointed Patron of the newly-formed Malawi-UK Chamber of Commerce (MUKCC), as the organisation moves to establish a permanent presence in the country and formalise bilateral trade infrastructure between the two nations.

The appointment was confirmed on Thursday at a business stakeholder engagement event in Lilongwe, according to a statement from the British High Commission.

Stubblefield framed the initiative as part of a broader push to strengthen private sector-led growth.

“A thriving private sector is essential for creating jobs, driving innovation and supporting sustainable economic growth,” she said, adding that the High Commission was “pleased to support this initiative.”

Hannington Gondwe, chief executive of MUKCC, said the Chamber was designed to function as a practical conduit for trade and investment flows between UK and Malawian enterprises, rather than a purely ceremonial body.

The launch has drawn a cautious welcome from Malawi’s existing private sector infrastructure. Ronald Ngwira, president of the Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, said the new Chamber’s success would hinge on its ability to complement, rather than duplicate, the mandate of established business associations operating in the market.

The Chamber’s Secretariat is understood to be finalising governance arrangements ahead of a formal launch, with further details on its operational structure and membership model expected in due course.

The move comes as the UK continues efforts to expand commercial engagement across Southern Africa, positioning bilateral chambers of commerce as a mechanism for facilitating market access and investment flows outside formal government-to-government channels.
