Malawi leader JB pledges free fertilizers to chiefs

Malawi President Joyce Banda on Wednesday pledged to make a personal donation of fertilizers to the chiefs in the country.

She made the pledge at the New State House in the capital Lilongwe where she was hosting 66 chiefs from the country’s central region.

The President said she is pleased with what she said rightful role chiefs are now playing.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank chiefs for the work they are undertaking in various areas such as food distribution, the Presidential Initiative on Safe motherhood and Maternal Health, Agriculture and  hunger reduction,” she said.

The Head of State said she will soon be meeting chiefs from other parts of the country .

“I want to ensure that I work with chiefs using a bottom up approach, they are very  alert and know what need to be done to improve their livelihoods. I want to assure chiefs that I will work closely with them so that together we can build a better Malawi,” she said.

During the function the chairperson of the Presidential Initiative on Safe motherhood Senior Chief Kwataine of Ntcheu briefed chiefs on the various training workshops he has been holding on safe motherhood across the country.

Chief Kwataine said  he has trained about 300 traditional leaders in the southern, central and northern part of Malawi. The target is to reach all of them by 2013.

The coordinator of the Safe motherhood Initiative Ms Dorothy Ngoma said shelters for expectant mothers are being built in various heath centers and about 200 midwives are undergoing training. The goal is to train 1000 midwives by 2015.
