Fifa to reschedule Malawi World Cup fixture against Nigeria

The world soccer governing body Fifa is expected to reschedule Malawi national soccer team World Cup qualifying game, Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has .

According to FAM, the development comes following the qualification of Nigeria to the Fifa Confederations Cup.

Nigeria are the reigning African champions after beating Burkina Faso 1-0 in the 2013 Orange African Cup of Nations Competition which was hosted by South Africa.

“FAM has received a communication from FIFA (Head of Fifa World Cup and Olympic qualifiers) regarding the watch dates in the 2014 Fifa World Cup qualifiers to be played in June 2013,” reads the the statement made available to Nyasa Times.

“According to Fifa, since Nigeria has qualified for the Fifa Confederation Cup to be played in Brazil for winning the AFCON 2013, the organising committee for the Fifa World Cup will meet on the 19th March 2013 in Zurich to discuss the optimization of the group ( Malawi, Nigeria, Kenya and Namibia) calendar in June 2013,” reads the statement signed by Fam C.E.O Suzgo Nyirenda.

The outcome of the meeting is likely to change the dates for the games.

This means that Malawi home matches in June may be played during midweek once a decision is made by the organizing committee for Fifa World Cup.

“In this respect, FIFA may have to reschedule respective Malawi home matches to be played one or two days ealier than 7th and 14th June 2013 in order to give the African Champions enough time to prepare for the Fifa Confederation Cup,” said Nyirenda in the statement.

According to the original fixture, Malawi faces Namibia next month.

Meanwhile, the Flames are yet to start preparations with the new technical panel following the sacking of head coach Kinnah Phiri, his assistant Young Chimodzi and technical director Jack Chamangwana.
