Evangelical Lutheran Church celebrate 30 yrs in Malawi: VP asks for prayers on 2014 polls
Vice-President of Malawi, Khumbo Kachali Saturday asked the church to pray for the 2014 tripartite elections for them to be peaceful, free and fair to advance the country’s democracy.
Kachali made the address during celebrations marking 30 years of existence for the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Malawi (ELCM) in Lilongwe.
“On behalf of the President Dr Joyce Banda, I ask you the church to pray for the country as it is preparing for the first ever tripartite elections in May next year for our democracy to advance,” he said.
He added without prayer and God’s guidance, nothing can go right in this country, hence the need for the church to stand in the gap and pray for the country so that God should guide it always.
The Vice-President then applauded the Bishop of ELCM Reverend Dr Joseph Bvumbwe for the huge role he has played in building Malawi and its democracy.
“Malawi’s history is incomplete without Bishop Bvumbwe. He was key in the fight for multiparty politics in the country in the early 90’s. He was even in the fore front criticizing the past government when things were not going right. Government thanks you for your role,” he applauded.
Kachali also acknowledged ELCM’s development work throughout Malawi in HIV/AIDS, natural resources conservation, water and sanitation amongst others.
“You have been helping government for a long time in eradicating poverty and the People’s Party led government is ready to work with the church in continuing to develop Malawi,” he emphasized.
In his speech, Bishop Dr Bvumbwe said ELCM will continue to advocate for peace, unity and love in the country as they are foundations of development.
He reaffirmed that ELCM will continue to be governments partner in development as it has been doing since 1982.
“We will continue praying for Malawi and offering our support in various sectors. With the approaching elections, we ask government to ensure that civic education reaches everyone in the country,” he said.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Malawi (ELCM) is a member of the Lutheran World Federation, has 50,000 members.
The development arm of the ELCM, Evangelical Lutheran Development Service (ELDS), is engaged in integrated rural development and educational projects.
