Norway gives Malawi K13.5 bn budgetary support
Norway has become the first donor countries to fulfill its promise towards providing financial support to the current budget and beyond.
This follows the signing of a K13.5 Billion (about 250 Million Norwegian Kroner) budgetary support agreement that will be fulfilled between 2013 and 2016.
Minister of Finance Ken Lipenga and Norwegian Ambassador Asbjourn Eidhammer signed the agreement in Lilongwe on Tuesday.
Speaking at the function, Eidhammer said: “We will transfer the money over a period of three years from 2013 to 2016”.
He, however, warned the Malawi government against the abuse and misuse of the funds.
Eidhammer also blamed the previous DPP government of rampant corruption and for lacking transparency and accountability which he said it really negatively affected Malawi as most donors peddled back in providing Malawi with support.
On his part, Lipenga while thanking the Norwegian government for the support assured the Norwegian government through Ambassador Eidhammer that the funds will be used for the intended purpose.
