Blantyre City Council blocks Nyondo’s whistle stop tour
Blantyre City Council on Wednesday blocked a whistle stop tour organised by National Salvation Front (NASAF) president James Nyondo.
The tour was planned to take place at Lunzu, Che Mussa and Ndirande Malabada.
Nyondo confirmed that the city council blocked the tour but could not give reasons for such decision.
However, Southern region police saw no problem with the tour and gave consent to the same but could not take place because of the councils position.
“People have already gathered at the three venues and we have spent a lot of money on this tour. It is very unfortunate,” said Nyondo in an interview with Nyasa Times.
Blantyre city council chief executive Ted Nandolo justified the blockage saying the party took the council by surprise.
Nandolo said NASAF asked for permission a day before the function, arguing they should have done so much earlier.
But Nyondo disputed Nandolos claim.
The tour was to take place a day after Nyondo had a news conference in Lilongwe where he outlined his party”s strategy of bailing Malawi from poverty.
He said if voted into power next year, his government would link farmers and businesses to their counterparts in America.
He told reporters that farmers would get tractors so that they stop depending on the hoe as the main tool of farming after 50 years of independence.
