K800m Kamuzu stadium renovations start
Government has started the renovations of the country’s soccer mecca Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre, the project which is estimated to cost k800 million ($4.7m).
The stadium manager Mhango confirmed with Nyasa Times that the maintenance will include repairing of the four floodlights towers, the electronic scoreboard and the four broadcasting cabins.
“The work has started already and so far so good,” Mhango told Nyasa Times.
“The contractors are expected to remove the four floodlights tours to put new ones. They will also paint and put air conditioners in the four broadcasting cabins which housed MBC and the ministry of information,” said Mhango.
He also revealed that there are suggestions to put a big television screen inside the stadium like what other stadiums in Europe have.
“We have plans to put a big screen inside the stadium but our main concern is vandalism otherwise plans are there to erect a big screen,” he said.
Sharma Contractors are the ones removing the old floodlights while the whole work will be done by a South African contractor.
Last month , Director of Sports in the Ministry of Youth Development and Welfare, Jameson Ndalama was quoted in The Nation newspaper as saying the initial phase one of the project will include repairing floodlights, the electronic scoreboard and replacing the gates.
Ndalama was also quoted as saying this phase will coast around k400 million (about $2.35m).
“The initial phase has already started.if everything goes well, it might be completed in the next six to eight months. But that will depend on whether the materials for the project will come in time and how smooth the process will be done,”Ndalama was quoted in the paper.
He said, according to the paper, the target is to have the initial phase through by June 2012.
