Mayor hails keep BT City Clean initiative
Blantyre City Mayor Councillor Noel Chalamanda has hailed the Keep Blantyre Clean and Green initiative saying it has started bearing fruits.

Opening the Second Ordinary Council Meeting on Monday, Chalamanda said since the launch of the initiative on November 1, 2014, the focus was on resource mobilization.
Said Chalamanda: “I am glad to report that the campaign has managed to mobilize some resources. We are now in the planning period on how to implement the activities lined up.”
“In fact, we you go round the city, you will see that there are concrete bins. These concrete bins are part of the resources mobilized under the Keep Blantyre Clean and Green campaign,” he said.
The Mayor thanked the Council task force for collaborating with the team from corporate world to mobilize such resources.
Chalamanda, however, appealed to well-wishers to continue supporting the campaign materially and financially since there is a lot to do that require resources.
On the response to the disaster that hit Blantyre City, the Mayor described the period since the heavy rains destroyed properties and killed some people as “very difficult.”
“But let me hasten to commend the unity of purpose that has been demonstrated during this period. We have shown oneness in responding to the needs of the victims.
“Some of you went out of your way to make sure that those who lost everything including shelter have found somewhere to sleep. It is the same disaster that has shown us that as residents and a people, we still hold on to the values of love.
“We saw families providing meals to victims and opening their houses to accommodate their neighbours who had lost houses,” he said.
The Mayor also talked highly of the campaign to remove vendors from the City streets saying despite facing resistance, the exercise was progressing well.
“Although some street vendors can still be seen here and there, Blantyre is one of the cities that has done quite a lot in this regard. Let me congratulate the task force on vending for a job well done and I would like to encourage the members to do even more despite being intimidated by ill minded people,” he said.
