Chibuku employees in K5.8m ‘cashgate’: Malawi Police arrest 4
Malawi Police Service in eastern district of Mangochi have arrested four people for allegedly stealing over K5.8 million belonging to Chibuku Products Limited (CPL).
Of the four, two are CPL employees, identified as Levi Bakili and Joseph Mwale, who worked as cashier and driver, respectively while The other two are security guards, according to Thomeck Nyaude, Eastern Region Police spokesperson.
The suspects are believed to have stolen the money on February 15 at round 4pm.
According to Nyaude, on the material day, Bakili was in his office and around 4pm, the second suspect, Mwale went into his office to deliver cash realized from sales of that day.
“After handing over the money, the two moved out of the office and went to the trading centre and as they were going out, Bakili left the office keys and those of the cash box in his office; he also left the office door unlocked, but locked the main entrance,” said Nyaude.
When they returned, Nyaude said, they discovered that cash box was open and they subsequently reported the incident to their Branch Manager, who reported the matter to police.
After calculations it was established that K5,860,000 had been stolen and the four suspects were consequently arrested.
They will appear in court to answer cases of breaking in and theft contrary to Section 311 of the Penal Code.

Let me explain in plain English, office door unlocked, main door locked. That means it was an inside job, simple!
