Red Lions were first to open the score sheet through Kumbukani Mwambene before Surestream equalized on the spot kick through Benard Chimayimba.

Then Zomba-based soldiers were at it again with an Innocent Bokosi goal before Surestream were awarded another penalty, which they also scored in the dying minutes of the match.

Red Lions were also denied what they thought were three clear goals, which the referee ruled them as off-sides.

After the final whistle, some Red Lions players led by Loti Chawinga manhandled the referee with punches for denying them the three goals and awarding Surestream a penalty.

When the disgruntled ‘Nganyu supporters’ saw the referee being beaten and defenceless they were not happy as they started pelting stones and objects towards Red Lions players trying to rescue the match official.

The angry fans chanted, ‘revenge’ heading towards the dressing room to beat up Red Lions players.

Red Lions players locked up themselves in a dressing room, as the angry fans were pelting stones.

Fans mobilised themselves and smashed Red Lions bus as they continued chanting, ‘Wapalamura chitedze lero chidzakuyabwa.’

After 15 minutes Red Lions players stuck in their dressing room, fellow soldiers from the Blantyre camp arrived at the stadium in a Malawi Defence Force Tata vehicle armed to teeth.

The soldiers started manhandling people. Some went as far as the Masauko Chipembere highway chasing people.

One person, who was severely beaten with sticks tried to reason with the soldiers that he was not among those pelting stones but to no avail he got the beating.

Reports reaching Nyasa Times shows that one person was rushed to the hospital unconscious with several people injured.

On pitch, Surestream bossed the play but they failed to turn the few chances into goals and at times they could not create meaningful chances.

After enjoying early possession, Surestream were shocked when Kumbukani Mwambene scored the opening goal with a thunderous drive before beating Alex Makina in goals.

The hosts dominated the play but the soldiers always looked threatening on counter attacks with Innocent Bokosi and Mwambene displaying some fantastic football.

Red Lions coach Prichard Mwanza blamed the referee for their draw but was quick to condone indiscipline from some of his players for beating up the referee.

“The referee was biased and he is the reason for denying us full points. But I condemn the beating of the referee,” he said.

Surestream coach Peter Mponda was delighted with a first point in the league.
