Bullets back on top after beating Civo, Silver lose again: TNM Super League Malawi
Malawi football champions Big Bullets moved into the TNM Super League top slot with a 2-1 victory against struggling Civo United on Saturday at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.
This was a first win for Bullets after three straight draws, and they moved top on 23 points, two ahead of second-placed rivals Be Forward Wanderers.
The champions have played nine game but the Nomads, who remain unbeaten in nine games, could regain top spot if they win against Silver Strikers on Sunday.
Veteran Fischer Kondowe scored for the Peoples Team through a header before Yamikani Fodya’s well curved free kick earned Bullets the second goal.
The Civil Servants scored their lone goal through Nelson Kangunje, who released a grass cutter shot outside the box to beat Vincent Gona in goals.
The people’s team was also denied many scoring opportunities with Henry Kabichi and Jaffalie Chande being the main culprits.
Big Bullets were in defiant mood from the word go, as they dominated the proceedings of the match, especially on the left flank where Dalitso Sailesi operated.
The civil servants lacked coordination but they were strong in defence where Emmanuel Zoya and John Lanjesi formed a strong wall.
Zoya and Lanjesi were the main pillars that even Chiukepo Msowoya was kept on the tight rope by the two giant defenders.
Towards the end of 45 minutes, Civo United piled up more pressure to Bullets defence, but their striking force was toothless until recess time.
In the second half, Civo United came with fresh ideas, as they resorted in using wingers to supply crosses to their strikers but alas! Their strikers lacked confidence and composure inside the box.
Bullets made several changes by introducing Chikumbutso Kanyenda, Miracle Gabeya and Jelesi Lufeyo for Dave Nga’mbi, Fischer Kondowe and Pilirani Zonda.
The Civil Servants tried to unlock Bullets defence but it was too strong until the last whistle.
Civo United coach Oscar Kaunda blamed the referee for their loss.
“ We have lost because of questionable decision by the refree Andy Kuseli . The referee was against us otherwise we were not supposed to lose this match, he played a part in our loss,” said Kaunda.
Big Bullets coach Mabvuto Lungu praised his charges for the three points and urged their fans to continue drumming support to the team.
In Nchalo, it was a black day for Silver Strikers, who went down 1-0 to Azam Tigers through Peter Katsonga’s penalty goal following a foul on Dan Kumwenda.
Tigers moved to fourth on 17 points from nine games as Silver slipped to fifth on 16 points from 10 games.
In Mzuzu Stadium, Innocent Bokosi’s two goals handed eighth-placed Red Lions a 2-1 win over Moyale Barracks who sneaked in the consolation through sniper Deus Nkutu.
Moyale are 10th on eight points from nine games.
In another game, Epac made it two wins in a row after beating Airborne Rangers 1-0 at Civo Stadium to jump to eighth on 11 points.
