Blantyre City Council to rehabilitate public toilets

Blantyre City Council (BCC) says it is planning to rehabilitate all toilets which are not functioning within the city.

The  council’s Director of Health and Social Services Dr. Emmanuel Kanjunjunju said the rehabilitation process would start soon.

Kanjunjunju said there are some toilets in the city which are not functioning but are vital in as far as people’s health is concerned.

“The council is going to reach in agreement with the operators who are going to run these toilets on behalf of the city council.

“The council will make sure that the operators who shall take over those toilets from the council should offer affordable price to the public,” he said.

According to Kanjunjunju, some of the toilets to be rehabilitated are in places like Clock Tower, Njamba, Catholic Institute (CI), Zingwangwa, Henry Henderson Institute (HHI) among others.

He said the rehabilitation process is part of the council duties to improve sanitation in the city adding that the process shall be done jointly with the operators who shall awarded the contract to run the toilets.

However, Dr. Kanjunjunju did not explain on how much the council would use on that project saying the contractor is the one to estimate the expenditure of the rehabilitation exercise.
