Daza ‘ready’ to slide Tembo out of MCP presidency
Malawi Congress Party (MCP) secretary general Chris Daza has said he has rolled up his sleeves to campaign and become the party’s president and slide veteran politician John Tembo out of the hot seat.
Daza – Tembo’s favourite henchman until he fell victim to vicious political in-fighting – said he is ready to win the MCP presidency “even if the convention was called at midnight.”
“I am more than ready. Even if they call a conventionat night. I will go there and win the MCP presidency,” he told Zodiak Broadcasting Service’s Tiuzeni Zoonaprogramme on Sunday.
Daza also addressed public rallies in Kasungu and Ekwendeni in Mzimba at weekend where he reasserted his desire to be party president.
Tembo barred
He said Tembo, the 78-year-old veteran politician, is barred by the party constitution to contest for the presidency under the MCP ticket for the consecutive third time.
“The MCP constitution is clear, Tembo cannot seek a third term lucky,” said Daza. “I hope he will honour the constitution and not run for leadership or seek another nomination to lead it in 2014.”
Daza said he want to revamp MCP and bring in younger blood.
The party, he said, needed to “open up, reach out and catch up”.
Tembo is however on record saying the issues whether the constitution is to be amended to allow his candidature in 2014 will be decided at the convention.
