Renowned gospel artists, Thoko Katimba, who just recovering from storm of debts that resulted in him being arrested in Mchinji, is back in the news for wrong reasosns.

The Blantyre-based Katimba of the ‘Werenga Madalitso Ako’ hits the Friday afternoon ‘scandal sheet’ Weekend Times tabloid with fresh allegations that he obtained k470, 000 by false pretence from radio personality Fredrick Mkula.

Of late, the tabloid has been publishing stories of the soft-spoken singer duping fellow gospel musicians and businessmen.

Mkula said the gospel artist told him he had a rover which he was selling and pocketed the money as an upfront payment but never delivered the vehicle.

“He told me he was selling the rover that was October last year. l got interested and gave him the money only to start telling me stories on the day he was supposed to deliver it.

“At first he told me the car was stuck at a garage for repairs then he said l could get another car from him because he had three more cars with MRA but was failing to pay duty on them,” he said.

Mkula said the situation prompted him to consult lawyers who wrote summons to Katimba but was uncooperative.

“He even went as far as discouraging me from consulting the lawyers saying lawyers were thieves. when l read in the papers that he had been arrested for debts l decided to consult the police,” he said.

He was arrested on July 10 at Sheaffers Hall where he was performing at a gospel show but was released on bail after he promised to pay the money on July 20 but did not do so.

The artist confirmed that he owed Mkula some money and that he had started paying back after the matter was reported to Lilongwe police.

“I am actually surprised that he has taken that route. I explained to him that l am in financial difficult time. l started paying back the money and have so far paid k100,000 whose deposit slip I presented to Lilongwe police,” said Katimba, according to the paper, which further reported that the artist  pleaded that the story should not be published.
