Court sentences police constable to 30 months for motor bike theft

A police constable in Dedza has been sentenced to two and half years in jail with hard labour for stealing a motor cycle at a drinking joint.

The court was told that Richard Nangwiri stole the motor cycle at 24 hours bar.

Police prosecutors told the court that the police constable stole the motor cycle was drinking beer but was caught after he collided with a pedal cyclist.

The court also learnt that Constable Nagwiri was also on interdiction for two other related cases of money theft and theft of bicycle.

First Grade Magistrate Symon Mwambo found him guilty.

And in mitigation he asked the court to be lenient with him because he was a bred winner but the magistrate observed that Nangwiri showed bad characters which were not supposed to come from a law enforcer.

Nangwiri hails from Maleta village in chief Kadewere’s area in Chiradzulu.

Some sections of society faulty corruption and bribery in the recruitment of police officers which lead to high levels of indiscipline.
