Unknown criminals on Friday shot and killed one of police detective officers who foiled a robbery in Limbe, Blantyre.

Southern Region police publicist, Nicholas Gondwa said the officer, assistant superintendent Victor Midiani was shot dead near Bakhresa Grain Milling after a car chase with unknown criminals who had wanted to rob Right Price Wholesale.

Midiani was head of Ndilande police Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

”The incident happened at around 5pm on Friday. Our officers got information that some criminals wanted to rob a shop in Limbe,” explained Gondwa.

He added: ”They got engaged in a car chase up to Bakhresa Grain Milling where they cornered the criminals who later started shooting at the officers.”

Midiani died on the spot after being shot in the head.

The criminals, who are still on the run, were driving a Toyota vehicle registration DA 1555.

The vehicle has been recovered in Lunzu.

”We are currently hunting for the criminals.”

Midiani was buried on Sunday in Lilangwe, Blantyre. The burial was attended by the Inspector General of police, chief secretary and police commissioners.

He is survived with a wife and three children.

  33. Things not adding up. The CID worked in Ndirande has a tip of an attack in Limbe .Why not share the information with friends in Limbe. He decides to chase the criminals in his personal car. Would somebody tell me why we have different departments in the police service. If the Cid had the tip he should have cordinated with his friends. Now we have a senior police officer saying that if they catch the thugs they will be lucky to go to court alive. And he had to repeat that statement. Can I ask the IG to repremand this senior officer because this statement can tarnish the image of the police. I know he was angry at this brutal murder but he was not supposed to say such statement on a public TV .May be say it to his men that the thugs should be brought to court while dead. I personally knew Victor .he was a good man with apromising future and even those who killed him must be regretting.

The police officers drinking beer while in police uniform. How do you expect a police officer who has been drinking for over 9 hours to be in a good state of mind to execute his duties normally. I do not know whether our Late Midiani was part of the drinking crew. But when you are drunk you can easily misjudge situations. As we heard from the police’s public relations man, this was a case of misjudgement on the part of our police or a case of kudelera. Taking chances with criminals. How can you be loading a gun in front of a criminal? The other part you should know is that these police officers drink with these criminals throughout the night. The criminals know the policemen inside- out. They buy each other beer and discuss nkhani pamenepo. This case of shooting of the Late Midian (RIP) might be one of those cases of a deal gone sour. There is one police CID who works in Limbe but stays in Chilobwe and he is the one who cordinates most of these .the officer runs several minibuses and he drives and his wife drives too. Limbe will be at peace if you transfer this CID officer to Chitipa .as part of reforms please transfer all juniour officers from the south to central region

    Sad developments for Malawi n security at large! However, it is a wake up call to review the capacities of the law enforcers tactially, i.e trainining defensively n offensively, use of communication gadgets to improve etc. Imagine, thugs rounded up but managed to find a way out to Lunzu without any police mounting road blocks. What a coincidence, on the same Friday here in RSA in one of the Highways there was a fatal shooting between criminals and the SAPS officers who were patrolling. unfortunately two officers lost there lives and only one thug got injured and is in hospital under police guard, but the irony is that they have set a reward of R400,000.00 for anyone who can be able to give info of the other eleven thugs who still are at large. I thought the one who is captured and hospitalised would provide all the info they need.

Somehow while I sympathise with Victor but I find him to be overzealous .As CID he was just supposed to provide intelligence to relevant personel within the police service who were supposed to conduct the chase. On another note as somebody working in Ndirande he was supposed to work with his friends from Limbe so that they condon all exit routes from Limbe . Imagine the criminals were able to drive all the way to Lunzu yet we have police units spotted all over that could have intercepted the thugs . Police operation should apply an element of phycology. A true mask man who kinly observe actions of his oponent and a trained policeman should have seen the thug aiming at him either shoot first or duck as his friend did. As they were doing the chase they should have been in touch with their command centre to provide cover. Note that most armed criminals are either ex policemen or soldiers and one needs to be tactical in the approach. From what has been written it seems these cops had tips that the thugs wanted to attack priceworth and they should have planted their armed special marksmen within the shop or around thereabouts .anyway RIP vic
