DPP will open contest for presidency
Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has clarified that President Peter Mutharika will contest to become the party’s torch bearer in 2019 elections alongside other aspirants.
Mutharika told a mass rally in Blantyre two weeks ago that he is DPP candidate for the 2019 elections and “there will be no Plan B”.
But Minister of Information, Kondwani Nankhumwa said the President was only making his views known.

He said his statement does not bar anyone from within the party or outside the party from contesting.
The Minister said the DPP as a party will hold a convention towards 2019 General Elections where several positions including that of the president will be contested.
“If there will be other people who will declare their interest to compete for the DPP’s torch bearer, let me say that the door is open because the DPP remains one of the democratic parties in the country,” said Nankhumwa.
Nankhumwa further explained that during the convention all democratic values will be respected so that at the end of the day people should choose a leader of their choice.
