Malawi Police arrest wife of lawyer on-the-run

Malawi Police  have arrested  wife to lawyer Chrispine Kam’mayani who is  reportedly at  large following an alleged swindle of a cool K10 million, and charged her with bribery after her attempt to bribe Police officers got foiled.

Chronology of events leading to her capture indicate that when Nyasa Times published that  Police are hunting Kam’mayani for fraudulent criminal charges, his wife went to Lilongwe Police Station with K40,000 in her purse.

But Police officers rejected her bid and later locked her up.

Mrs Kam’mayani went to the station in order to plead with the law enforcers not to arrest her husband.

Lilongwe Police Publicist Kingsley Dandaula asked for more time to cross check however he confirmed that Police is indeed received complaint on K10 million swindle.

Dandaula confirmed that the lawyer’s wife was held on bribery allegations.

Documents in Nyasa Times possession indicate that the learned lawyer Kam’mayani, on 8 January, 2015 signed a document that he is guaranteeing that the seller of plot number 47/4/820, a Mrs Mercy Chitamo and yet the real owner of the plot is Monica Chitawo

Kam’mayani sent  an SMS to Chimwemwe Sibande – who paid the money for the bogus plot – that he will refund the misappropriated money.

Sibande said  Kam’mayani as a lawyer knew only too well what the consequences of his actions would be, saying abusing trust of clients is “despicable act”.

Kam’mayani could not pick his phone when contacted.

  4. In my opinion, I would believe what the police are saying regarding the arrest of the lawyer’s wife. It has to do with them having to keep what the lawyer adores most.

    How would someone just wake up in the morning and walk into a police station with cash. You would think that its naive or the police arent telling us the truth. I know my Malawi and I know my Police officers. Release the wife as she is not in any way an accomplice to a crime committed by her husband

  20. Most of these professionals called lawyers are day light robbers. Simple as it is to make K10,000,000 someone how has spent so many years at Chanco studying law get so taken up with 10Million for sure thus $20,000 poor lawyer and poor wife. Thats a price of 2011 Nissan X-trail at Nagoya in Blantyre along Chipembere Highway. Bringing shame to Law Society. He gets arrested then you will a swam of lawyers ganging up to bail out him. You guys know it there is none above the law ask Ralph how is dancing in courts.

  26. The police rejected the money because it was very little comparing to the 10 million.That woman knew that there are some police officers who Receive such bribes,hence her courage.However grant her a bail out immeditely othewise she will sue you for rape.

  31. King solo…it is an allegation untill proven in court. That’s why they call it allegation. It doesn’t matter if u were caught killing a person if arrested it is still an allegation untill the court says yes u killed. It a legal thing bra..

  33. Well this is un believable . How can one go to police and try to pay the police so that they don’t arrest a suspect. The police are holding the wife to force the fugitive husband to come out of hiding .

  38. These Sibandes are also to blame, how on earth can they proceed to buy a plot without crosschecking with the owner, you need to trade carefully otherwise you will lose the money as well

      1. Ujeni, that’s what we call blind trust and it’s dangerous. In business studies we are taught to trust BUT verify. They should have verified. Who doesn’t know that most lawyers live a plastic life and are thieves?

  42. While I conndem the act of this ‘learned friend”, I do not condone the practice of arresting next of keens. I believe the file thus opened at the police station is for one Mr Chrispine Kammayani and no other. Even if he had a son named after him, the warrant of arrest is only for Chrispine, the lawyer. This is contrary to all what our constitution stands for.

    Release the wife now, and go on the man hunt for Chrispine. Failure in our efforts must not comprise other citizens’ freedom. If Chrispin’s wife did something wrong, I believe its on a lesser count.

    We talk of reforms, and we stick with colonial ideas. Wake Malawi, wake up my country.

    1. Moya, can’t you read that the wife was arrested for bribery? That’s another case altogether. She needs to face the law for corrupt malpractices.

I decided not to comment on this issue but have been forced to do so because some did not buy the queen’s language the reporter says the wife is being held for trying to bribe the police in order for them not to pursue the husband. Anyasa times ndimakuuzani ine nthawi zina muzilembako muchilomwe chitumbuka komanso muchichewa mwina Ena angamamveko nawo. Kodi nwina vuto ndi sukulu ija coz the writer has used simple English which would not need someone to consult a dictionary.

    3. Moya, read the story first before you comment. The wife has been arrested for attempting to bribe a police officer. It’s a crime committed by her.
