Malawi Police says bank robbery suspect still married to cop

Police in Malawi have revealed that Pelekani Malunga one of the arrested suspects in the K100 million bank robbery is still married to one senior police officer.

Gondwa: Investigating the wife's role
Gondwa: Investigating the wife’s role

In an interview Southern Region Police spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa said so far the law enforcers are investigating to establish whether the wife played a role in the robbery.

Said Gondwa: “Two of the eight arrested suspects are FMB employees while one of them is husband to a police officer. Investigations are still going on.”

Malunga is one of the eight suspects that have been arrested in connection with the robbery that took place at the country’s First Merchant Bank (FMB) in commercial city Blantyre on December 23, 2014.

He is married to Blantyre Police Commandant Sup Blandina Chanika and it is suspected that the guns and handicuffs Malunga used belongs to Malawi Police –possibly obtained through Chanika.

Newly appointed Inspector General (IG) Paul Kanyama is on record saying Malawi Police Service (MPS) management will not shield any officer involved in crimes.

“In the Malawi Police Service, nobody is above the law and our mandate is to enforce the law and not to break it or terrorise the very same people we are supposed to protect. I would like to thank the residents of Kanjedza for being courageous in assisting the police in arresting the suspect and his accomplices,” said Kanyama.

One police officer was killed during the robbery.

Gondwa said the eight were arrested on Monday.

Forty eight year old Malunga comes from Musa Magasa Village, T/A Machinjiri.

The other seven are Felix Malope (35) from Chitengu Village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Bvumbwe’s area in Thyolo, Keston Mbewe (28) from Makunje Village, T/A Machinjiri in Blantyre and Felix Khozomba
(40) from Likumbo Village, T/A Likoswe in Chiradzulu.

Others are William Chirwa (54) from Nzikuola Village, T/A Mulonyeni in Mchinji, Edward Kamiza (28) from Lizulu in T/A Gomani’s area in Ntcheu, Limbani Hope (35) from Malope Village, T/A Nsanama in Balaka
and Martin Malimwe (39) from Kalongonda Village, T/A Mabuka in Mulanje.

  1. kodi Malawi akupita kuti abale ndikumva chisoni apolice m’malo mogwira ntchito yawo yachitetezo ndiyo amene alowa umbava. stupid DPP government

  2. The bottom line of these problem is leadership Everything seems to be disorganised in Malawi.Wherever there is disorganized we expect indiscipline, disunity etc,This is indiscipline on part of police.Don’t look at the robery alone but the whole structure of leadership at all levels.

  3. They are alot of thieves in the Police service.I think the reason is that most of them are underpaid. They r always conniving with thieves to make ends meet.Mu ma roadblock a police are always begging from people. The minibus overloads, the driver has to throw an aloevera to pass thru the roadblock. That’s how rotten Malawi has become.Aliyense akungolota kuba ndi economy ya Pitalayi.

  4. Foreign investors are so scared, otherwise the withdraw their businesses and the already. Poorest Malawi shall b a dungeon of poverty.crucify those thieves especially the police officer robbers get done with them

  5. Shame shame shame, police getting involved in robbery its deadly, its same as your wife being your enemy

I just want to point on. One thing here. it all comes back to our government, Police are not properly taken care of, imagine a Police staying in Ndirande, chemusa, mbayani, chilomoni and even in well known places. Where thugs also leave. These guys were supposed to have their own location they should not be associating with the general public, mwana wa wapolice akulira ndi njala mwana wa mbava akumwela sausage tea shaaaaa, wapolice aleke kujoina u mbava

    Shame shame shame malawi

    1. Yes should still be married. Why do you want to make them divorce? Aa aah ndi banja ka limenero till death do them apart.

  6. I hope mmayiyo wachitidwa intadikt 4 smooth investigations! This is normal procedure 4 serving officers.

  7. Fumbi Jazz band idayimba nyimbo,” Inu a zimayi mukufuna kukwatiwa mudzionetsetsa!!!×2 Mudzionetsetsa mukufuna kukwatiwa mudzionetsetsa !!!×2 Mukutimvetsa mbala m’mudzi mudzionetsetsa mukufuna kukwatiwa!!!×2 Zildjian kwathuku kumene kupita nkhuku sikudziwika!!!”
That’s why it is not important to completely abandon our traditional music. They are very educative, entertaining and informative. Koma poti a zimayi amakhala ali pa race ndikufuna kupeza banja amangoti yagwa mbale mndiwo. This lady police officer must be apprehended! Ndi mbavanso ameneyo. Shupiti!!!

  8. It’s very sad indeed but my salute goes to the community who made sure that these thugs must be put behind bars. My plea now goes to the judiciary to administer justice without fear or favour some bread winners have lost their lives here coz of these wild animals in the form of human beings.

  9. Police women want to live a luxurious life; akufuna adZIphoda ndi mary K as if alipanchito yeniyeni thats why the husbands are resorting to stealing; IG chotsani apolisi ose adama. 12. Then investigate the cop and if found guilty arrest her!its sad this is unfair to the officers!

  13. The truth is that Perekani is married to brandina Chanika the current Commandant of Police training school in Limbe(KANJEDZA) and not Blantyre police station.
There is not such a position at Bt police station.

  14. I feel the investigations are taking the right direction and the police must move quickly to establish the truth of the matter before the issue gets cold.
Bravo! To the police, if the wife is indeed connected then let her also face the wrath of the law, no body is above the law.
Thanks and I rest my case.

  15. PLEASE ALSO ALSO ARREST CHE UJENI FOR FRAUD PRESIDENT MUTHALIKA GAVE MK 100,000 TO bribe journalists but HE GAVE THEM ONLY ‘MK 50,000 AND POCKETED THE BALANCE. MOYA DO SOMETHING ON THIS ISSUE.

  16. We need a information on the recovered money. Otherwise timenya ma demo. Declare the recovered money NOW NOW NOW!!!!!! THIEVING POLICE

  17. Police involvement in robberies goes back to the days of the Chilomoni baby and his friends. Dig deeper you will unearth alot.

  18. U policemen, tell us da truth we are in full of furious. Ndinu amodzi why are u failing to explain the amount of money u have found.

  19. wapolice gwirani nthito yino.kukakika kwa wapolice kukuyanawaka nawanthuwose.awo wakiba ndalama izo mukuti cash gate nawo wakawa wanthu waku manya malango.munkhungu ndi munkhungu not kuti mtenge wapolice yaye.ine ngati vice president wa chipani icho cha babika sono nkhuti wapolice gwirani nthito umo muku gwirira.kweni mungaluwanga kukakaka uyo wakawibira watolankhani ma 100,000 nakuwapasa ma 50,000.chonde pala mwakaka munthu uyu charo chimugomezganinge chifukwa malawi yose yikumumanya munkhungu uyu.

  20. The problem that we have is we love shielding the long doers, thus why we always have new crimes burrying the old.is that the way of ending the crimes.not at all.for example some one was given money to share them amongst the jounerist but large part of it was stollen right from the hand of the president.Nothing has been said showing that this thief is free.mr president u have ajob at hand.solve it as apresident of the nation not astate house.

  21. Iyaa, mfweee mfweee apolisi mmangoba zinthu mkazipeza and mmafuna munthu akunyemereni mkapeza katundu wake..Umenewonso ndi umbava

  23. This truly shows that the stealing of both private & public resources will never come to an end in our poorest country. This is so because those who could protect our property are the very people in the forefront robbing us.At first it was the very country drivers robbing the poorest taxpayers & now it is the security officers taking away their portion. This is very unfortunate !

  24. I do not think that if you are a husband to a thief you are a thief too. Banja ndilovuta kupeza makamaka ukakhala mkazi komanso bwana. Similarly, linking me to the thieves because i am a lomwe is not fair. Please stop this and comment on the substance of the story. It is commendable that police have arrested people who can go all the way to kill just to get free money. Uyo anaphedwa ndalama sizake iye anangopita kuntchito kukapezera ana ake chakudya basi iwo nkumupha tsono ana ake atani? Ndalama timagwirira ntchito osati kungotenga za wena. Indeed police has to tell us how much they have recovered.

    1. Exactly the same way it is unfair linking any so called suicide mongers who happen to be Moslems to all Moslems, you see how it hurts?? Am just saying.

  25. chikufunika apart ndalama zomwe adazipezazo zioneke.Truth awululeni apolice musaope monga ena achita poulula mbava zina.Mupanda kuulula ndiye kuti nanuso muli gulu nanga amakuuzani bwanji kuti mutseke pakamwa.Ndomusabisale pachipande ndiye kuti mwanona nawo

  27. Shaaaasaa….BWANA INSPECTOR GENERAL,ARE YOU AWARE THAT ANOTHER ROTTEN SIDE OF YOUR MEN IS THE TENDENCY OF STEALING RECOVERED MONEY/PROPERTY? A LOT OF CHAMBA ENDS UP BEING SOLD BY CID.NOW WE HEAR SOME MONEY BEING RECOVERED IN FMB MURDER AND THIS HAS NOT BEEN DISCLOSED….. IS THIS COZ IT MIGHT AFFECT INVESTIGATIONS? I AM SURE MR KANYAMA YOU ARE AWARE HOW BADLY ROTTEN YOUR MEN ARE. … YOU SHOULD BE THE WORST IN SADCC!

  28. Ndalama zomwe anazipeza a police atazikumbira pansi ndizingati, nanga zilikuti? A police mwaloweka umbava kwambiri. Osamangotiuza kuti tagwira anthu 8,tiuzeni ndalama zomwe zapezeka.. NYASA TIMES tafufuzani zandalama zomwe zapezeka.

  31. Ppl tell these called police to behave,,,anyway these r security guard in america theydont know nothing about policing the comunity.

    1. Point of correction to you again Blessings. She is deputising her husband as a thief. If she knew she was still a law enforcer, she wouldn’t have stolen the guns to give to the husband just because she wanted a better Christmas ….full of nyama from the stolen cash ……

  32. We have said time and time again that the Lhomwes are thieves – Can you see the list of names in this article? What these people know best is stealing and killing, typical of devil’s work. Are you surprised therefore that DPP is a party of thieves? And are you surprised that Malawi has been robed of its resources through DPP? Malawi is finished, courtesy of the Lhomwes.

  33. Wow… this is not gud our life is in danger they can even kill the president if they want too! Where is the generals on this issues? These generals r too corupt they don’t save us ppl they r here to collect money from goverment. Traffic officers, police in our borders, road blocks, and in the rural areas, they r too curups they take the law into their own hands by taking bribe from the poor villagers. Prease generals save us from this ashame things happening in our country in ur watch. Braming the president it does’nt make any sence he can’t be everywhere at the same time,,,let’s unite and deal with these lazy ppl who want to get paid for nothing. Now theres this called tribalism it make me sick,,, God made a human being and for that matter we r all equally before him we don’t need civilwar in this country.

  34. Koma kupha șichilăngo.chonde a Police.mu saphe(tsatilăni malamulo po gwira nțchito yanu)

  37. Mr IG punish this so called Officers who r destroying the good reputation of our police.Pliz clean ur house as quickly and professionally you can cos:tikaona apolisi tikumachita matha koposa ngati kuti taona chimbalangondo.

  38. This case needs to be tried as quickly as possible and Death Sentence applied to the trigger man! That is the only way these robbers will get the message: robbery and murder does not pay!!

  39. No one from the North Lomwes and Kodikodis.Boma lilore ma guard azibonga kuti azkhala ndi mfuti.

  40. A Nyasatimes, tamaikaninso zithunzi za Mbava zi, dziko lidziwaziwa ma khruku amenewa. Anzanutu amatero. Check Cape Times, Cape Argus, The Sun, Sowetan., of RSA, and even CNN….etc.. your fellow media houses. Why not you?

  41. None of these idiots, thieves comes from the North. Atumbuka ndi anthu anzeru asiyana ndi mitundu inayi imangokhalira kuba right from the top kwa President, nkazi wa president mpakana kapopangolo wakumachinjiri-shame. Chipanda Atumbuka, northerners muthana nonse kuphana agalu inu. Napepe kwa anamfedwa ……

  42. Plz the money that were recovered which in black plastic bag must mentioned, Mr. IG ask the police officers who went to Sululu village about the money.

  43. DPP was accusing PP of sabotage yet the list shows Lhlomwes to be majority of thieves. Zopusa basi. Tamaphunzirani Ahlomwe. Ngati simuli Tenant Ku Estate ndiye kuti ndinu Mbava. Hahaha

  44. You can see all these people are from kumwela, kodi kuli anthu otani Ku thyolo and Blantyre ndizosadabwisa kuti ma voti anawina aaaaa awa alangeni abweze kayi ndalama ndeamngidwe, musayerekeze kudyanawo mufa nonse chaa ndatopa.

  49. @ truth, can specify where exactly is this Sululu village? You seem to have a good story worth to be a case study in this whole Police-involved roberries! You have demonstrated beyond doubt that some of the money stolen somewhere by some people end up in our police’ pockets. NB: Zambiri ndiika ndemanga ukandiuza kumene ndi liti izi zinachitika chifukwa ukuoneka kuti nkhani yakoyi ndiyosatha.

  50. There is a story in from Truth. How much has been recovered? Usually not all recovered stolen money is reported. Is this what they are taught at Kanjeza police training school? Plz arrest such cops.

  51. NKhani ya apolice kupezeka akuba siyachilendo, komanso sikwathu kuno kokha ku Malawi kumene apolice ali akuba, kumaiko ena ngati Zambia, Tanzania, Botswana, South Africa ndi ena ambiri kuli mbava za police osati zamaswera. Sindidziwa chifukwa chiyani ntchito ya apolice imakhudzana ndi ziphuphu, kugwilira, kupempha ndi kuba.

  52. As much as its embarrassing that the husband to a cop is involved but its unfair to be linking the character of her husband to her save her reputation most families a husband and wife do contrary things its normal, not that she may not be involved but investigate quietly without being loud about it, even cash gates suspects have wives but it would be unfair to drag the wives into being part of.

    1. My friend, these police thugs urge us to be tipping them of criminals amidist us. Here is mzimayi wa police, senior-nso for that matter, kumagonana ndi chigananga koma osapanga ‘tip’ apolice anzawo…
Ngat iye wapolice akukanika kupabga tip apolice anzawo, ife anthu wamba tingata?

  53. The one Kamiza does not know his home because Gomani is our Paramount Chief and does not have a jurisdiction as Traditional Authority. He presides over TA’s in whole of Ntcheu parts of Dedza ,Mwanza, Balaka and Mozambique. Similarly Lizulu is an area with so many villages within in it.

  54. so the list is ful of southern region bandits, and they r spoiling well behaved central region guys??????? whats is funny is that north has no bandits on the list!!!!!! keep it northnerners, this job of robbery is for souther region thugs!!!!
