MCP Opens Door for 2029 Leadership Race: “Every Member Can Contest”
The ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has declared that its leadership race ahead of the 2029 convention will be open to all eligible members, signalling the beginning of what could become an intense contest for the party’s future direction.

The announcement comes amid growing speculation within the party as several members have already begun quietly positioning themselves for the presidential ticket ahead of the 2029 general elections.
Speaking to the media, MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwira said the party’s democratic traditions allow any member to contest for the top position provided they follow the party’s established procedures.
“MCP is a democratic party and we do not block any member from contesting for the position of party leader,” Kabwira said.
However, she made it clear that while the door is open, aspirants must comply with the party’s rules and constitutional requirements before they can qualify as candidates.
“All those who are interested must follow the proper channels and meet the requirements set out in the party constitution. Leadership contests in MCP are guided by clear procedures,” she added.
Kabwira said the party believes internal democracy is essential for strengthening political institutions and ensuring that leadership emerges through a legitimate and transparent process.
Analysts Weigh In
Political analyst Ernest Thindwa has welcomed the party’s open stance, saying it reflects an important principle of democratic governance within political organizations.
Thindwa said political parties must create structured and transparent platforms that allow members to freely express their leadership ambitions.
“It is the responsibility of any political party to be well organized and structured in a way that creates space for members to express their interests and compete fairly,” Thindwa said.
According to Thindwa, open leadership contests help strengthen party institutions by ensuring that leadership is not imposed but instead emerges from a competitive and transparent process.
Early Signs of Political Jockeying
Although the MCP convention is still several years away, observers say the early signals of interest within the party reflect the high political stakes surrounding the 2029 elections.
Analysts note that leadership battles within ruling parties often shape the country’s broader political landscape, as the winner of the party ticket usually enters the national race with a strong political advantage.
Political commentators also believe MCP’s declaration could put pressure on other parties to embrace internal democracy and allow open competition for leadership positions.
A Test for Internal Democracy
As Malawi gradually turns its attention to the 2029 elections, the MCP’s position may serve as an early test of how political parties manage internal competition while maintaining unity.
If implemented effectively, analysts say the open-door approach could strengthen internal democracy within the party and reinforce confidence among members that leadership contests will be conducted fairly and transparently.
