The frequency and severity of the extreme event in Malawi has indeed been on the rise. We have been experiencing these events for the past few decades. It is unfortunate that we seem to have learnt too little from the past disasters. I totally agree with those who feel that Malawi should by now been a country that is resilient to disasters. To be resilient is to be able to: 1. Adapt to all forms of disasters (floods, drought, cyclones, armyworm…etc) 2. Plan (contingency plans, contingency funding) 3. Malawians have been reduced to “nobodies”. We have reached a point where we can not even plant a tree, waiting for western funding to buy seedlings. Where is the discipline my Malawi? If deforestation is indeed a problem, why do we wait for cameras to be set for us to plant a tree. If every family really planted just 2 trees each year from 1994 we could have been in another forest. We wait for NGOs to come and tell us the importance of trees, adverse effects of overpopulation, good agricultural practices; seriously? Unless we stop joking and be strict… Read more »
While criticizing our moral performance, let us do something for the victims as a community. Grid or nature may be punishing us, but there are people in need.
Family values have been thrown to the wind. Lust and real need for money is at the core of many of the social iniquities. Partners, especially women with huge responsibilities but who have hubbies or partners who are short of money or are stingy with money are hunting gold from loose men with spare cash., as a matter of course. As you cannot hold a cooking pot on one stone (fuwa li modzi), so too you cannot shoulder big responsibility with only one partner. Promiscuity is an easy means to getting that extra cash.
I would like to agree with the watchman that Malawi need to humble herself. There so many ills we need to repent from. Imagine even our leaders are not keen to mention God in their speaches, how do we expect God to be on our side? Hence calamities of diffetent sorts are happenning to warn us and yet we can not register it, The recent case of allowing same sex practices to freely be done is another cause for Gods wrath.

Our priorities are upside down. We should invest in production and not otherwise. Since floods took the tore no production of food has been done. Now this is another crisis and more is yet to come. When are we going to learn as Malawians to handle crisis situations? Wake up Malawi and let us learn how to deal with our problem. Do not look to the West for this. Our tax payers money is able to handle this crisis. We are able.
