Three children drown in Balaka

Three children all aged 4 have died in Balaka district after drowned in a stream few meters from their parent’s houses.

Police say the children met their fate on Tuesday when they went to bath at Ngolonyombe stream near their houses without the knowledge of their parents.

“The children, two of them from one family and the two other from the neighboring house, left their parents who were busy cooking after coming from the garden and went to the stream 100 meters away from their houses to bath”.

“When the food was ready, the children were nowhere to be seen and this made their parents to start searching for them only to be found dead in a steam nearby their houses with all their clothes on the river bank,” says Sub-inspector, Joseph Sauka Balaka Police spokespersons.

Postmortem conducted at Balaka District Hospital revealed that deaths were caused due suffocation.

Sauka says all the three children were coming from Elias village, Traditional Authority Nsamala in Balaka district.

Since the start of rainy season, nine people have died in Balaka district due to drowning.

Meanwhile, Police in the district care appealing to parents and guardians not to let children go or cross the rivers or streams alone so as to prevent sudden deaths caused by drowning.
